Before answering the questions, we need to make clear how to learn Chinese more effective and easier.
1, Track your progress.
Before you start, you need to know your current level if you already learn some. If it is the first time, of course, your level is zero.
When you learn several weeks, you need to do an assessment to know your progress. If you find out the progress is not obvious, maybe you need to adjust.
2, Set a proper target and arrange a correct study plan
Make clear your requirements. If you only want to learn speaking or conversation, please focus on pinyin and spoken Chinese. You can choose mp3 or podcast as a main materials. If you want to learn complete language, you need to learn Chinese character although character is a little more difficult than speaking. You need to choose some formal textbooks.
3, Choose proper textbook
Make clear your requirements again. Why you want to learn Chinese? For interests? school course? business? job? marriage? You can choose Practical Chinese, Business Chinese, Children Chinese, Travel Chinese, Character story, News Chinese ... different textbooks. Of course, all textbooks are all designed level by level.
4, Choose a experienced tutor
Before you select a tutor, you need to learn the teaching history and evaluation or feedback from the previous students of the tutor. You have to ask for feedback data of your targeted tutor from school or the tutor himself/herself like this one (of course, the sample is ebay, but teaching is the same)
5, Practice what you learnt as more as possible
It is impossible for anybody to learn a language very well without enough practice. To find many enough volunteers from China to help you to practice conversation and more. I think you need at least 3 times per week to do practice with native speakers. Of course, you can use online talk, it is much easier.
