China Travel – Xiling Snow Mountain

Sunday, April 25th, 2010

Xiling Snow Mountain is a national place of interest, which lies in Dayi County, Chengdu City in Sichuan Province. It is 95 km away from Chengdu City and covers an area of 482.8 square kilometers. The Great Snow Mountain in the mountain resort, 5,164 meters high and covered with snow all year round, is the highest peak in Chengdu City. In spring, flowers blossom; in summer, waterfalls show up here and there; in autumn, red leaves scatter over the mountain; and in winter, silver snow presents an attractive view. The mountain resort is an ideal place for entertainment, holidays, summer tours, mountaineering and skiing. There one can find primeval forests, sheer precipices, overhanging rocks, various flowers, rare birds and animals, rapids and waterfalls, and also such alpine natural sights as sea of clouds, the sun rising, the forest Buddha Halo, the Yinyang Boundary (a dividing line between the dead and the living, or a contrast between darkness and light), and golden rays of sunlight atop the mountain, etc.

Mountain flowers come into bloom sequentially from low altitude to high in the mountain between March and August, with the blossom period as long as five months. Some big trees can reach 10 meters high and over 100 centimeters in diameter, with twisted branches. Waterfalls appear here and there, and form over 30 rapids and springs overlapping one another, with the height of 30-70 meters. The red and yellow leaves all over the mountains in autumn form a marvelous spectacle. Winter is certainly the best season of one year.

Beijing Olympic – The game of life

Saturday, April 24th, 2010

Stepping into the exhibition hall of Beijing World Art Museum, one might be kindly reminded to keep off the exhibit – The Eternal Game – an installation work of a chess set on which 32 life-sized human statues stand in two opposite camps on a chessboard stretching across the floor.

The left half of the work symbolizes the male part. The blue king, queen, elephants, horses, castles and soldiers, which are painted with blue hint and cool-blooded patterns, transmit a sense of conflict and mercilessness. The right side, with the tone of red, is the female realm. Wearing antlers, covered with feathers, praying to God, ravaged by life, pregnant or handled by fate, these statues represent the source of life and show their frailty at the same time.

The work expounds the meditation of the eternal game of love, conflict, beauty and life. From the visual angle of a woman, it displays the roles of game players and the pressure they receive under the modern life and environment.

The Eternal Game, which was created in 1992, is considered as one of the most creative works in contemporary fine arts history. The installations were inspired by shop window mannequins. The surrealist painting endows the plastic models with value, emotion and energy.

This grand installation set is part of the latest show of 47 works created by American veteran artist Leza Lidow, who is famed for her surrealist style executed on life-size canvas or plastic statues.

Among other works, her oil paintings transmit aesthetic and mysterious atmosphere. Elegant nude bodies of women are covered by gauze curtain in Prisoner of Her Dream and triptich The Spirit of Female. The gracefully clad ladies are sometimes fixed with animals’ heads – dog, cat, ox or sheep – as in Days of March and Cheated by Beauty. A dreamlike scene runs through some works. A rocking chair hangs between a row of withered trees, with a fairy maiden riding on it in The Role of Women. And between two solemn columns leading to heaven, several happy women fly in the air in the work, Wedding Dreams.

The Last Supper expresses the love and generosity women contribute to the world. Clonning shows the different roles that women play in society. Rembrandt, a work with the element from the representative painting of the master, renders the respective of Lidow toward Rembrandt.

Viewers might find the vestige of ancient goddess statues and the art style of such masters as Marcel Duchamp, Rene Magritte, Salvador Dali, and Giorgio de Chirico in Lidow’s works. Combining the elements from ancient times through Renaissance to contemporary art, Lidow presents elegance and philosophical meaning via her creation. Born in China in the early 20th century, Lidow brings her works to her birthplace for the first time.

China Travel – Wuyi Mountain(2)

Saturday, April 24th, 2010

Natural Heritage

The Wuyi Mountain Range, usually called Greater Wuyi Mountain, straddles the border of Fujian and Jiangxi provinces, stretching over 500 kilometers. The average height of the peaks is over 1,000 meters above sea level.

The most beautiful part is the Small Wuyi Mountain scenic area in the territory, 15 kilometers southwest of the Chong’an County seat, Fujian Province. It is surrounded by streams and valleys, and has no direct link with neighboring mountains.

The special Danxia landform features include the Stream with Nine Turnings, 36 peaks, 72 caves and 99 rocks. The distinctive views of monoliths of red sandstone surrounded by emerald green water inspire the imagination.

Legends and Stories

There is a beautiful legend about the Yunü Peak. Yunü, a fairy maiden, fell in love with Dawang, an earthly king. She came to Wuyi Mountain and enjoyed its fantastic natural beauty very much together with the king. So she decided to stay there. However, a demon named Tieban (Iron Plate) informed the Jade Emperor. The Jade Emperor flew into a rage and turned the demon into a peak, known as the Tieban Peak, to separate the Dawang Peak from the Yunü Peak. Therefore, the two lovers couldn’t see each other though they were only a short distance away.
