The Graduate

(At this critical moment, there is a sound of the car in the driveway outside.)

Benjamin: Oh Jesus. That’s him.

(Ben leaps at the door, pushes Mrs. Robinson aside, struggles with the door, gets the door open, runs into the hall and down the stairs. He rushes into the sunroom and sits down. Sound of footsteps on the driveway outside. Ben jumps up, gets the glass he has been drinking from and sits down again. SOUND of the front door opening and closing.)

Mr. Robinson: Is that Ben’s car in front?

Benjamin: Yes, sir! I drove…er…drove Mrs. Robinson home. She wanted me to drive her home. She wanted me to drive her home, so I drove her home.

Mr. Robinson: Swell! I appreciate it!

Benjamin: She is upstairs. She wanted me to wait down here until you got home.

Mr. Robinson: Standing guard over the old castle, are you?

Benjamin: Yes, sir.

Mr. Robinson: Congratulations.

Benjamin: Thank you.

Mr. Robinson: It looks like you need a refill.

Benjamin: Oh no, I have got to go.

Mr. Robinson: Is anything wrong? You look a little shaken up!

Benjamin: Oh no no, I’m just a little worried about my future. I’m a little upset about my future.

Mr. Robinson: Ah, come on. Let’s have a chat together. Scotch?

Benjamin: Bourbon.

Mr. Robinson: Ben, how old are you now?

Benjamin: Twenty. I’ll be twenty-one next week.

Mr. Robinson: That’s a hell of a good age to be.

Benjamin: Thank you. (Takes the glass)Thank you very much.

Mr. Robinson: I…er…I wish I was that age again. Because Ben…

Benjamin: Sir?

Mr. Robinson: You will never be young again.

Benjamin: I know.

Mr. Robinson: Can I say something to you?

Benjamin: What?

Mr. Robinson: How long have we known each other now? How long have you and I known each other? How long have your dad and I been partners?

Benjamin: Quite a while.

Mr. Robinson: I watched you grow up, Ben.

Benjamin: Yes, sir.

Mr. Robinson: In many ways I feel as though you were my own son.

Benjamin: Thank you.

Mr. Robinson: So I hope you won’t mind my giving you a friendly piece of advice.

Benjamin: I’d like to hear it.

Mr. Robinson: I think you ought to be taking it a little easier right now than you seem to be. Sow a few wild oats, take things as they come. Have a good time with the girls and so forth.

(Mrs. Robinson comes downstairs.)

Mrs. Robinson: (to Benjamin) Don’t get up.

Mr. Robinson: I was just telling……

Benjamin: Ben.

Mr. Robinson: Ben here that he ought to sow a few wild oats. Have a good time while he can. You think that’s sound advice?

Mrs. Robinson: I’ve got to go.

Mr. Robinson: You have yourself a few flings this summer. I bet you are quite a ladies’ man, huh ?

Benjamin: Oh no!

Mr. Robinson: What? You look to me like the kind of guy who has to fight them off. (to his wife)Doesn’t he look to you like the kind of guy who has to fight them off?

Mrs. Robinson: Yes, he does.

Mr. Robinson: Elaine gets down from Berkeley on Saturday.

Benjamin: Oh, yes?

Mr. Robinson: Won’t you give her a call?

Benjamin: I will.

Mrs. Robinson:Benjamin, Benjamin?

Benjamin: Yes?

Mrs. Robinson:Thank you for taking me home. I’ll see you soon, I hope.

Part III Getting to Know Each Other 相互认识

PAULA: Seems colder today, or is it just me?

MARIA:Er… I’m not sure.

PAULA:Peter should be here soon… There was a very good French film on TV last night. Did you see it?

MARIA: No, no I didn’t.

PAULA: So, are you settling in?

MARIA: Yes, fine, thank you.

PAULA: That’s good. You’ve got a company flat, haven’t you?

MARIA: Yes, I’m very lucky.

PAULA: Yes, you know they’re like gold dust. I tried to get one when I first started working here, but they wouldn’t give me one. It’s a very odd system because some people have had a company flat for years and they pay peanuts in rent for them.

MARIA: Oh, look, there’s Mr O’Donnell.

PETER: Sorry I’m late.

PAULA: Good. We can order now.

PETER: Still, it’s given you girls a chance to get to know each other. What shall we have?

PAULA: Seems colder today, or is it just me?

MARIA: It is colder. It was on the weather forecast.

PAULA: Was it? I’m sure it’s not normally this cold.

MARIA: Still, it’s warmer than I expected!

PAULA: Really? I suppose it’s still pretty hot in Spain at this time of year.

MARIA: Yes, especially where I come from.

PAULA: Where’s that?

MARIA: Yes, especially where I come from.

PAULA: Where’s that?
