Just then, Nick walks in. He notices the tense ambience.

Nick: Hey kids, what’s up? Why the long faces?

Nick:

Yummy: You didn’t just call, did you?

Yummy:

Nick: No, I’ve been at the hospital all day.

Nick:

Kurt:It is just that someone just called and just didn’t say anything. Just

did some heavy breathing.

Kurt:

Nick: You’re kidding right? The same happened to me the other day. It

was about three days ago and no one was in. The phone rang and when I

picked it up, I only heard heavy breathing. I must have been on the phone

for at least thirty seconds before I hung up. I didn’t think anything of it at

the time.

Allison: Come to think of it, someone called yesterday, but as soon as I

said ‘hello?’, the person hung up.

Yummy: I’m gonna have a shot in the dark here, but have you noticed

that all these phone calls have only started since Jason moved in?

Kurt:You’re not suggesting that all the phone calls are for him, are you?

Kurt:

Yummy: Either that or he’s making them himself.

Yummy:

Melissa: No, he wouldn’t do that! He seems like a good man.

Melissa:

Yummy: Maybe, but there is definitely something suspicious going on.

Yummy:

A few days later, Melissa is all alone (or so she thinks) in the house when

the phone rings. As she walks down the stairs to the lounge she hears

someone pick up the phone.

Jason: Hello? Oh, its you. I told you not to call me here! It’s too risky. I

think my flatmates are getting suspicious. They say that people keep

calling up and breathe heavily into the phone! Please don’t call here again!

Hmmm… Yes… I understand… But that’s unreasonable, you’ve gotta

give me more time.

Just then Melissa comes bursting into the room.

Jason: Gotta go.

Jason:

Jason quickly puts down the phone and looks very guilty.

Jason

Melissa: Who was that, Jason?

Melissa:那是谁, Jason?

Jason: No one important. Honestly. I thought that no one was in…

Jason:

Melissa: Jason, you’re shaking. What’s the matter?

Melissa:Jason,

Jason: Nothing, really…

Jason:

Melissa: Jason, I am not leaving until you tell me exactly what the hell is

going on here.

Melissa:Jason,

Chinese Online Class – Mend the fold after a sheep is lost – Learn Chinese

During the Warring States Period (475-221 BC), the State of Chu became less powerful during the reign of King Xiang. The king and his important court officials were dissolute and incompetent and indulged themselves in luxury and excessive pleasure. Zhuang Xin, one of the ministers, foresaw that the country would soon be in danger. One day, he remonstrated with the king: “Your Majesty, wherever you go, you’re always surrounded by people who flatter you. They do everything to make you happy so that you forget to tend to state affairs. If you go on like this, sooner or later, the country will perish.”

The King of Chu flew into a rage. “How dare you! You even use such vicious words to curse my country and mean to arouse resentment among the people!” Zhuang Xin explained, “I dare not curse the State of Chu. But I really have a premonition that Chu is facing great danger.” Seeing that the king was especially fond of those corrupt officials and trusted them in everything, the minister thought Chu was bound for extinction. So he asked the king to let him leave Chu. He wanted to go to the State of Zhao and stay there for a while.

The king gave him the leave. Five months later, the King of Qin sent his troops to invade Chu and occupied a large tract of its territory. The King of Chu himself went into exile. Now, the king remembered Zhuang Xin’s words. He sent his men to fetch him. Seeing Zhuang Xin again, the king asked him, “What can I do now?”

Zhuang Xin replied, “It’s not too late if you mend the sheepfold when finding a sheep is missing.” He then made some good suggestions to rehabilitate the state and recover the lost land. The king was very pleased.

The idiom “Mend the fold after a sheep is lost” comes from Zhuang Xin’s answer to the king. We still use this metaphor to advise someone that even when he has made a mistake and suffered losses, he can still remedy it by drawing lessons from the mistake.
