Just then, Nick walks in. He notices the tense ambience.

Nick: Hey kids, what’s up? Why the long faces?

Nick:

Yummy: You didn’t just call, did you?

Yummy:

Nick: No, I’ve been at the hospital all day.

Nick:

Kurt:It is just that someone just called and just didn’t say anything. Just

did some heavy breathing.

Kurt:

Nick: You’re kidding right? The same happened to me the other day. It

was about three days ago and no one was in. The phone rang and when I

picked it up, I only heard heavy breathing. I must have been on the phone

for at least thirty seconds before I hung up. I didn’t think anything of it at

the time.

Allison: Come to think of it, someone called yesterday, but as soon as I

said ‘hello?’, the person hung up.

Yummy: I’m gonna have a shot in the dark here, but have you noticed

that all these phone calls have only started since Jason moved in?

Kurt:You’re not suggesting that all the phone calls are for him, are you?

Kurt:

Yummy: Either that or he’s making them himself.

Yummy:

Melissa: No, he wouldn’t do that! He seems like a good man.

Melissa:

Yummy: Maybe, but there is definitely something suspicious going on.

Yummy:

A few days later, Melissa is all alone (or so she thinks) in the house when

the phone rings. As she walks down the stairs to the lounge she hears

someone pick up the phone.

Jason: Hello? Oh, its you. I told you not to call me here! It’s too risky. I

think my flatmates are getting suspicious. They say that people keep

calling up and breathe heavily into the phone! Please don’t call here again!

Hmmm… Yes… I understand… But that’s unreasonable, you’ve gotta

give me more time.

Just then Melissa comes bursting into the room.

Jason: Gotta go.

Jason:

Jason quickly puts down the phone and looks very guilty.

Jason

Melissa: Who was that, Jason?

Melissa:那是谁, Jason?

Jason: No one important. Honestly. I thought that no one was in…

Jason:

Melissa: Jason, you’re shaking. What’s the matter?

Melissa:Jason,

Jason: Nothing, really…

Jason:

Melissa: Jason, I am not leaving until you tell me exactly what the hell is

going on here.

Melissa:Jason,

Beginning with Yu the Great, the Xia Dynasty had lasted about 400 years before Jie became the supreme ruler.

And that was in the 18th century BC. Jie was extremely tyrannical and dissolute. This aroused great resentment among the people. Tang, the chief of the tribe Shang, took advantage of this situation to overthrow the Xia Dynasty and establish the Shang Dynasty in the early 17th century BC. During his preparations for the overthrow, Tang won popular support.

One day, Tang was having a walk in the open country. He saw a man catching birds with a big net spread like a cage and mumbling: “Come on, birds! Come into my net. All of you, whether flying high or low, east or west, just come into my net!”

Tang walked over and said to the man: “This method is ruthless! You’ll spare no birds this way!”

With these words, he cut the net down on three sides. Then he murmured in a light voice as if praying: “Oh, birds! Fly to the left or right as you like. And if you’re really tired of your life, come into this net!”

When chiefs of other tribes heard about this, they were all moved. They said: “Tang is a good king indeed. He is so kind even to birds and animals. He must be more merciful to human beings.” And very soon, more than 40 tribes pledged allegiance to Tang.

From that story came the idiom “wăng kāi sān miàn,” meaning “to leave three sides of the net open.” Later, people changed it into “wăng kāi yī miàn,” that is, “to use only one side of the net (since the other three sides are left open).” It tells people to give somebody a way out and to be lenient or merciful.

wăng kāi yī miàn
