A student of Shanghai Tongji University yesterday received a special gift – a plough souvenir and coloured glaze as the millionth visitor to Ningbo’s naturally inspired brick and tile pavilion at the Urban Best Practices Area.
Wu Yanna, the lucky visitor, said she chose the Tengtou Pavilion because her family lives in the Haishu District in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province.
The plough symbolises the persistent spirit of Tengtou towards the goal of wealth and harmony, said Fu Qiping, Party Secretary of Tengtou Village, one of the Global Ecological 500 and World Top 10 Harmonious Villages.
The main structure of the two-floor building at the 2010 World Expo’s Urban Best Practices Area replicates Tengtou Village. It was built with old fragmented bricks and tiles, a common architectural tradition in Zhejiang’s countryside. It features a countryside lifestyle and natural philosophy in tranquility and harmony.
Traditional Jiangnan folk house elements are embodied in the door, windows, walls and roof of the structure, to fully showcase the unique cultural features of a modern Jiangnan water town.
Inside the pavilion, visitors will listen to the sounds of the 24 solar terms and learn about the planting of capsicum, strawberry and rice, whose cultivation dates back 7,000 years.
There will also be a six-minute film showcasing the flavor of Ningbo’s countryside and photos of 300 Ningbo families.
