Colombia celebrates its National Pavilion Day today with a performance by singer-songwriter Fonseca in the Expo Center’s Red Hall at 7:30pm.

Juan Fernando Fonseca released his first CD “Fonseca” in 2002.

Since then he has become a phenomenon in Colombia, achieving double platinum sales in 2006 and winning major awards in South America every year.

This year marks the 30-year anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relationship between China and Colombia and Colombia will celebrate the 200-year anniversary of its independence on July 20.

Colombia and China have witnessed sound development in bilateral relations and China is an important trade and investment partner of Colombia, Colombian Foreign Trade Minister Jaime Bermudez said at this morning’s official ceremony at the Expo Center, hoping Colombia would have more cooperation with Chinese enterprises.

About 1.5 million visitors have toured the Colombia Pavilion since the Expo’s opening on May 1, equaling the number of tourists to the country every year, according to Bermudez.

Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Wu Hailong said the design of the Colombia Pavilion blends traditional culture and modern technology of the country and visitors will be able to experience the glamour of South American cities and the vigor of Colombia’s people.

The 1,000-square-meter pavilion in Zone C is themed “Colombia is Passion, the City is Activity.” The outer walls are decorated with butterfly designs to give the building a tropical feel.

It features sections on the Pacific, the Caribbean, the Andes and the Amazon.

Exhibitions cover history and culture, geography, indigenous peoples, biodiversity, arts and culture, economic development and urban living.

In the Pacific section, visitors can experience the roar of the ocean along breathtaking white beaches. The Caribbean area features stunning coastlines and castles. The Andes area showcases major cities and coffee-growing regions. The Amazon section features its lush scenery, indigenous peoples and environmental protection.

Colombia products include coal, coffee, cotton and textiles, and the manufacturing and service sectors are also featured.

Colombia aims to transform its textile and clothing sectors, and hopes the Expo will attract investors and garment makers.

The country’s dynamic cities are also showcased.
