Officials from China and Italy today unveiled a Suzhou-style garden now being built on the San Servolo island of Venice.

The new garden, Dayuan Garden, will be a landmark of San Servolo to mark the friendly relationship between Suzhou and Venice cities, the officials said at today’s press conference at the Venice Pavilion at World Expo 2010.

Suzhou was once described by Italian traveler Marco Polo as paradise on earth, and it is a sister city of Venice.

Ye Fang, the modern artist of Suzhou, said that the Dayuan Garden had been built since March 12 this year on San Servolo island. It is expected to be completed during the spring next year.

With the concept of “Combine human and nature,” which comes from Chinese classical philosophy, Dayuan Garden shows the traditional features of Chinese gardens. The model of Dayuan Garden stands on a sand table which is one meter by half meter. Five bridges of different materials represent five elements in Chinese culture — metal, wood, water, fire and earth.
