Natural Q began life as a boy-girl duo from Taiwan made up of two curly-haired singers. Chico and Waa met in 2003, when the former was playing an independent gig and hired the latter as a back-up singer for rehearsals. The two musical souls came together, joined by a simple desire to just sing, and hit upon the quirky name, Natural Q.
Natural Q’s blend of bossa nova, folk pop and light jazz have made them superstars of the indie circuit. Their three albums are so popular in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and the mainland that they won the best album of the year at the Taiwan Golden Music Awards.
Waa left the band last year, leaving Chico to find two other members. The new-look line-up tours Beijing next week.
In the beginning, there was no particular direction or theme. They went through all the demos and picked out songs that felt right to them. Usually the inspirations came from little things in life. “Little things in life can often spark ideas and became our inspiration for songs,” they said. Their debut album, C’est La Vie, was released in April 2004. Their second album, C’est La Vie no2, was released in 2005. Natural Q is the first band signed by A Good Day Records, a unique indie label in Taiwan run by Charles Cho. For C’est La Vie Cho did everything, from marketing, finding partners, distribution to CD cover design. It was indie music with a small following, but now it is stocked by major music chains. Waa left the band in search of self-development last year, leaving Chico to release the third album under the Natural Q name, Recycles, in 2006.
Chico also found other two music makers, Riecky and Yang Ming. Their meeting was also accidental. Riecky caught Chico’s eyes when she performed in Guangzhou. Riecky played violin and sang the lyrics naturally and innocently. Chico noticed the skinny girl’s powerful performance. Yang Ming was introduced to Chico when he needed a drummer. The shy Yang played drum like a magician, bluntly and energetically. The new Natural Q plays in Beijing and Shanghai next week. It is the first mainland tour of the new line-up.

The Times Higher Education-QS World University Ranking (THESS), a university rating company, said that University of Indonesia (UI) ranked the 201st among 500 world’s best universities, Kompas daily reported on Friday.
“This is an extra ordinary achievement. Last year, UI ranked the 287th and in 2007 ranked the 395th,” the university’s rectorDr. Gumilar Rusliwa Somantri was quoted as saying.
Based on the THESS survey on 5,000 universities worldwide, UI is now included in elite university lines in Asia (the 34th) and in the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nation) countries (the 5th).
The institution evaluation was based on performance indicators of research and publication, teaching, graduates’ work performance and others.
Gumilar said that in line with UI’s increasing rank, the amount of national and international research publications by the university’s researchers had increased to 10,050 in 2009 compared to 9,050 in 2008. In the same period, the number of the university’s researchers increased to 1,005 from 937.
