Happy Chinese, with joy and ease.
Why are you so “mei jing da cai,” Daniel.
It’s very unlike you.
“Mei jing da cai?” What does
that mean?
“Mei jing da cai” means unhappy
and without any energy.
“Mei jing da cai” means to be
unhappy or out of sorts.
“Mei jing da cai.”
I haven’t had breakfast yet,
how can I be “you jing da cai?”
Daniel, there’s no such terms as
“you jing da cai” in Chinese.
But it’s good that you haven’t
had breakfast.
What’s good about that?
I mean, I could take you
to taste some of Yangzhou’s snacks.
That’s great. Let’s go!
Come on, Daniel.
Yangzhou’s stuffed buns are great.
They smell good, but I wonder
how they taste.
This is the famous five dice bun.
It’s stuffed with diced chicken, pork,
shrimp, bamboo shoots, and sea
cumcumber.
With original chicken soup,
the buns taste salty sweet,
and are a wonderful snack.
There’s a story behind it too.
Zhè lǐmiàn hái yǒu gè gùshi ne.
There’s a story behind it.
Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty
was having breakfast in Yangzhou.
He requested something nutritious
yet not too rich,
tasty yet not too fresh,
oily yet not too fatty,
crispy yet not too hard,
fine yet not too soft.
This was a super hard task for
the chefs.
Five different conditions.
I guess this Qianlong was really picky.
What happened, then?
With the suggestion of a
Yangzhou’s chef,
these buns were invented.
Qianlong absolutely loved it.
Because the chef’s name was Ding,
and there are five main ingredients.
Therefore, people of Yangzhou
started calling it five dice buns.
After all the talk, I still haven’t tasted a bite.
Come on and try out
the five dice buns.
Well?
Tasty.
Well, these buns really have
a great taste.
I haven’t had enough yet.
You have a really big appetite.
You have to blame these tasty buns.
Han Jia, are there more buns
that we should try?
What is it with you and buns?
There are plenty of other snacks here.
Yangzhou’s snacks are tasty
and inexpensive.
Yángzhōu xiǎochī jì hǎochī ,yòu pián yi.

and cheap.
What are we having now, Han Jia?
I’m treating you to
Yangzhou’s second wonder,
thousand-layer cake.
I think that’s a bit too much.
Four or five layers would be good.
A thousand layers is excessive.
The thousand-layer cake has 64
layers actually.
Not a thousand.
That’s still too many.
Don’t worry, the cake is very small.
It won’t be a problem.
See, here it comes.
Okay, I’ll set my heart at ease then.
Tasty and soft.
This is Yangzhou’s third snack wonder.
Jade steamed dumping.
It’s green like jade indeed.
Let me try it. Okay.
Well? Tastes great!

“Wu lun…dou…” expresses different
conditions with one common result.
It’s often used in Chinese.
For example, no matter how great
the difficulties, I will persevere.
Another example, wherever I go, I’ll
always remember Yangzhou’s cuisine.
No matter where I go,
Yangzhou’s snacks will never
leave my mind.
It seems that Daniel’s appetite is

Very satisfied.

Eating the whole time.

Han Jia, do you know how many different
snacks there are in Yangzhou?
There are tons.
If we were to taste them one by one,
three days won’t be enough time.
