Happy Chinese, with joy and ease.

The history of Yangzhou is very

long and very rich.

How long is it, Han Jia?

Over 2,000 years ago, the capital

of the Guangling Empire was here.

Over 2,000 years ago?

What you said is “kong kou wu ping.”

In common saying, it’s “kong kou

shuo bai hua,”

which means empty talks with

no supporting evidence.

But I am not “kong kou wu ping.”

Here is the evidence.

Just follow me. You’ll be amazed.

Look and see what’s inside.

This house is so strange.

It’s so narrow. Living here can’t

be comfortable.

When did you say people lived here?

What else could this place be?

There are all these rooms and corridors.

This is not a house, but a tomb from

the Han Dynasty.

This is a tomb?

Yep. We’re actually inside the outer

coffin right now.

Can you believe it?

Such a giant outer coffin is very

rare indeed.

The artifacts from 2,000 years ago

is simply too amazing.

This 2,000-year-old artifact

is amazing.

You just said “jian zhi.”

Can you tell us what it means?

“Jian zhi” just means “jian zhi.”

What’s there to explain?

“Jian zhi” is an adverb

meaning “entirely so” with a feel

of exaggeration.

For example, it’s so hot here,

I simply can’t take it.

“Jian zhi,” third tone, second tone,

means simply.

For example, I can’t believe what

I’m seeing.

Yes, this is the tomb of West Han

Dynasty’s Guangling State Emperor.

You mean this is an imperial tomb?

How could you tell?

Come here, I’ll tell you.

See the outside of the outer coffin?

Yes, looks like four walls.

It’s called “huang chang ti zou.”

“Huang chang” refers to cypress

wood with yellow core,

the material used to made the outer coffin.

“Ti zou” means that the part of

the tree closer to the root faces

in the inside.

So, how much wood was used

in constructing this tomb?

This outer coffin used up 540 cubic

meters of rare wood.

Thanks to this sturdy material,

it still remains intact today.

Duōkuīle zhèxiē jiāngù de cáiliào, tā cái néng bǎocún dào

jīntiān.

Thanks to these tough materials, it has been able

to stay intact, right up to the present day.

This tomb is proof that

Yangzhou existed over 2,000 years ago.

That’s not quite accurate.

2,000 years ago, the capital of the Guangling

Empire was indeed in Yangzhou.

It was located in what’s today’s

northern Yangzhou,

where “Han Ling Yuan” is situated.

Oh, I see.

The tomb looks even more imposing

from here.

The Guangling Tomb, with a complicated

structure

and a grand and imposing scale,

is a rare artifact.

I have a question for you, Han Jia.

Who was the emperor of Quangling?

The emperor’s name was Liu Xu,

the fifth son of Liu Che,

the West Han Emperor.

He was sent here to be the Guangling

Emperor.

So, he was the first emperor of Guangling.

Now it totally get it.

What’s this?

A person laying there?

Han Jia, this must be an artifact

from the tomb too.

That’s right. It’s “jin lu yu yi.”

“Jin lu yu yi?”

It’s made out of jade chips?

That’s right. It was made by

linking jade chips with threads of gold.

It doesn’t seem like a robe, but rather,

an armor.

Tā kàn qilai bú xiàng yīfu, dào xiàng kuījiǎ.

It seems more like armor, than an

item of clothing.

Let me tell you about it.

The ancients believed that jade has

the effect of preservation.

So, the Guangling emperor had

this jade robe made,

in hopes that, by wearing it,

his corpse would be

perfectly preserved after his death.

It seems that his plan wasn’t

quite realized.

Of course it wasn’t.

But, this jade robe

did remain perfectly intact

and became an extremely rare artifact.

Yes, I have really broadened my

horizons today.

actually, there are so much

more to tell about Yangzhou.

But it’s just about time to wrap up

for today.

It’s okay, we can keep talking tomorrow.

We’re inviting you to stay

with our tour of Yangzhou tomorrow.

Don’t forget the wonderful scenery

montage is next.

Don’t go away.

And don’t forget our motto:

Guangling Tomb is situated on Shu Gang.

With two coffins, its history is long and rich.

Huang Chang Ti Cou with imposing scale.

Extremely high archeological value.

Abundance of burial articles,

each item a record of history.

Reflecting the imperial luxury of

Emperor Guangling.
