(BEIJING, June 29) — At the second day of the US Olympic Track and Field Trials in Eugene, Oregon, a flying Tyson Gay broke the tape at the finish line of the quarterfinals of the men’s 100m, clocked at an amazing 9.77 seconds. His run set a new American record, replacing the 9.79 time set by Maurice Greene in 1999.

According to sports.cn, a cautious Gay remarked that although he was happy about his run, he still had the semifinals and finals to get through. He noted his anxiety after barely barreling through the qualifying rounds, but his performance in the quarterfinals on Saturday has given his confidence the extra boost it needed.
His quest for Olympic gold will not be easy; world record holder Usain Bolt of Jamaica, who flew through the 100m recently at 9.72 seconds, will pose a formidable challenge to anyone hoping for Olympic glory in August.
