The prefectural government sits
in the city of Yining.
您若到伊犁来一般先要乘飞机

has to get to

Urumqi by air or train first.
再由乌鲁木齐乘汽车 飞机奔赴伊宁
Then from Urumqi, the visitor
gets to Yining by bus or air.

A well-known general Ma Yuan
is ambitious when he is still a child.
长大后 他当了地方的小官
He becomes a petty official when
he grows up.
有一次 他奉命送犯人到长安
Once, he was under orders to
escort convicts to Chang’an.
一路上 他觉得犯人非常可怜
On the way, he feels sympathy
for these cons.
这些人都很穷
These are all poor people.
他们是逼不得已才去犯罪的
They were all compelled to
commit crimes.
现在还要送到长安去受刑罚
Now they’re sent to Chang’an
to serve their jail terms.
于是马援就把犯人放了
He therefore sets them free.
他也逃到了很远的地方躲了起来
He also flees to a far-off place
to hide away.
这时正赶上皇上大赦天下
It happens to be under an imperial
amnesty.
就这样马援就开始安心地搞起
Ma Yuan thus intently starts up
畜牧业和农业生产
animal husbandry and agricultural
production.
不到几年工夫 他就成了一个大畜牧主
In a few years’ time, he turns into
an owner of a big ranch.
他把自己积攒的财产 牛羊
He gives away all his property
and live stock
都分别送给他的兄弟朋友
to his brothers and friends.
一位朋友非常纳闷 就问他
One of his friends perplexedly
asks him:
这些土地和财产都是你辛辛苦苦
“You earned all these fields
and property
经营得来的
through industrious management.
为什么要分给别人呢
Why did you give them away
to others?”
一个人做守财奴太没意思了
“It’s not at all enjoyable to be
a moneygrubber.
我从小立志要做一番大事
I’ve been determined to do something
big since my childhood.
想干大事的人一定要穷当益坚
To do something big, the poorer one
is, the more steadfast he should be
老当益壮才行
and the older, the more steadfast.
穷当益坚 老当益壮
“qiong dang yi jian lao dang yi zhuang”
就是说 越穷困 志向越要坚定
means that the more hard-pressed,
the more determined one should become
越年老 越要有志气
and the older he is, the more
strong-willed he should be.
后来 马援加入了军队
Later, Ma Yuan joins the army
立下了很多战功
and wins many military honors
成了东汉有名的将领
