Beijing Olympic – Kabuu takes 10,000 victory in Kenyan Olympic Trials

Lucy Kabuu swept up the first-place title in the women’s 10,000m final with a time of 32 minutes 16.6 seconds in the Kenyan Olympic Trials held on Friday, punching her ticket to the Beijing Olympics.

Penina Aruse took second with a time of 32 minutes 19.3 seconds. The world record time for the event remains 29 minutes 13.78 seconds, set by China’s Wang Junxia in 1993.

According to Athletics Kenya, the top two finishers will automatically qualify for a spot on the Olympic team. The third Olympic berth will later be determined by coaches.

Twenty-four-year-old Kabuu ranked 9th in the 10,000m at the 2004 Athens Olympics and finished fourth in the event at the 2008 African Athletics Championships.

Boaz Kiplagat and world champion Alfred Kirwa were also victorious at the meet, taking the top two seeds in the semifinal men’s 800m with times of 1 minute 45.32 seconds and 1 minute 48.27 respectively.
