它位于钱塘江东南岸

It lies on the southeast bank of the

宋朝时 有个叫张乖崖的人

In the Song Dynasty, a man called

Zhang Guaiya served as

在钱阳当县令

magistrate of Qianyang County.

有一天 他在衙门周围巡视

One day, he takes an inspection stroll

around his office building.

忽然看见一个小吏慌慌张张地

Suddenly he sees a petty official slipping

从府库中溜出来

out of the treasury house hurriedly.

张乖崖喝住小吏

Zhang Guaiya stops him.

你鬼鬼祟祟地在干什么

“What are you doing so stealthily here?”

那个小吏支吾了半天

The petty official stammers:

我 我 我从库里偷偷拿了一文钱

“I … I stole a penny from the treasury.

其实也没什么

It’s nothing serious.”

我最痛恨的就是你这样的人

“I hate people like you most.

明明是自己做错了 还不知悔改

You obviously know you did something

wrong, but you show no sign of repentance.”

张乖崖把那个小吏带回大堂 绑了起来

Zhang Guaiya takes the petty official to

the courtroom and has him bound.

那小吏并不服气

But the petty official doesn’t think

he has done anything seriously wrong.

哼 一文钱算得了什么

“Humph! It’s just a penny I took.

你也只能打我 并不能杀我

You can beat me, but you can’t kill me!”

你每天偷一钱 一千天就是一千钱

“If you steal a penny a day, it will be 1,000

pennies in 1,000 days.

这样日久天长

As time wears on,

绳子也可以把木头锯断

even a rope can cut a wooden board

into halves

一滴滴的水也可以把石头滴穿

and a constant drip of water can wear

a hole in a stone.”

于是为了惩罚小吏的行为

In order to punish this petty official,

张乖崖当堂斩了这个小吏

Zhang has him killed on the spot.
