Chinese Conversation – lesson 653

Saturday, December 12th, 2009

Dave: If you’re going to just throw your money away, you might as well give it to me to invest.
Alex: Where would you invest it?
Dave: Probably old stalwarts like plastics and sugar.
Alex: I think I want to try my luck with tech stocks.
Dave: Those are the most volatile of all.
Alex: I know. I lived through the Internet bubble in the late 90s, remember?
Dave: Yes, when everyone went crazy. No one was thinking long-term.
Alex: But isn’t that true of investors in general?
Dave: You’ve hit the nail on the head.
Alex: Well then, I’m gonna follow the trend and try my luck.

Beijing Olympic – Canada aims for two Olympic medals in Athletics

Saturday, December 12th, 2009

Athletics Canada aims to earn two medals at the Beijing Olympics, according to head coach Les Gramantik.

While two medals might sound like a low target, achieving the goal would give Canada two more medals than they earned in the last two Olympics combined.

Canada also faces more competition in Beijing. “But now there are 200 countries taking part in athletics,” said Gramantik in Windsor, Ontario, home of the 2008 Canadian Track and Field Olympic Trials, where 600 able-bodied athletes and 88 athletes with a disability are competing through Sunday to qualify for the Canadian Olympic and Paralympic teams.

Among Canada’s Olympic hopefuls are hurdler Perdita Felicien, Tyler Christopher in the 400 m and 800-metre star Gary Reed.

Canada’s Olympic roster will be released on July 22.
