Daniel, come on! The program is

about to begin.

Han Jia, you still haven’t told me

why you brought me here.

I brought you here

because I want you to see Pekingese.

Hey, that’s interesting!

Aren’t we in Beijing right now?

There are Beijing people

everywhere around us.

We didn’t have to come all

the way here.

But the Pekingese here are different.

They lived here 500,000 years ago.

They are known as Peking Man.

Here is Zhoukoudian Village

near Beijing.

It is the location where Peking Man

lived before.

It must be a place of special significance.

Of course. We may say

the existence of Peking Man

opened the prelude to Chinese civilization.

have Zhoukoudian’s Peking Man

as the opening chapter.

It’s beyond my expectation

that Peking Man

is of such great significance.

Today we should take a close

look at their homes.

Okay. We’ll start

with the Peking Man Site Museum.

This sand table gives

a full view of the site of Peking

Ape-men at Zhoukoudian.

We are now right here.

Hey, Daniel!

Yeah, I’m here.

What interesting thing has he

discovered this time?

Tā yòu fāxiàn shénme hǎowánr de le?

What interesting thing has he

discovered this time?

Daniel, you are here!

Yeah. You see I haven’t found

any Peking ape-men,

but, instead, I’ve found some modern men,

including a foreign friend.

They were the scientists who made

outstanding contributions to the

discovery of the ape-men here.

Without them,

it would be impossible for us to

see these things.

Look, this is Swedish scientist

Johan Andersson.

It was he who initiated the search

for Peking ape-men.

See, foreign scientists also made

contributions.

Don’t be smug. Come over here.

Actually, the man who discovered

the first Peking Man skull

Mr. Pei Wenzhong.

In 1929,

he discovered the first Peking

ape-man skull.

Then Mr. Jia Lanpo

found three more Peking ape-men skulls.

Where are all the skulls you

mentioned just now?

Can we take a look at them?

How anxious you are! They are

all over there.

There are so many skulls of

Peking ape-men.

These are all replicas.

The whereabouts of five originals

are unknown.

There is only one original

still existing in China.

And it is an incomplete one.

Where are those five original skulls?

They were lost during the

Second World War.

What has become of them is

a mystery even now.

tāmen de xiǎluò zhìjīn réng shì ge mí.

What has become of them is

a mystery even now.

But we can take a look at

things that are related to Peking ape-men,

such as the tools they used.

Okay.

Let’s go.

Oh, they are actually a few

broken stones.

They were used as tools.

Unbelievable!

It is already amazing for them

to be able

to make these stone tools then.

What’s more amazing is that

these Peking ape-men

were already able to use fire

and preserve live cinders.

How did we modern people

find out all this?

In the mountain caves where

these ape-men lived,

people found a stratum of ashes

which is six meters deep.

This shows that they were able

to use fire very skillfully.

Han Jia, come over here.

This ape-man is so handsome!

They are known as Upper Cave Men.

The place where they lived

is close to the caves of Peking

ape-men.

But their existence was found

to be much later,

about 25,000 year ago.

No wonder they looked much more

like modern people.

Daniel, look over there.

Those are the tools they used.

Oh, isn’t this a needle and thread?

Exactly. It is an ancient needle

used by Upper Cave Men.

They were ground into shape

using animal bones.

Gǔzhēn shì yòng dòngwù de gǔtou mózhì ér chéng de.

These needles were ground into shape

using animal bones.

That’s fantastic!

I never thought that they could have

made such ingenious things then.

That’s amazing.

Daniel, you have seen so many

exhibits related to the Peking ape-men.

What would you like to say?

I’d like to take a time machine

to return to that age.

It must be an enthralling experience!

A time machine?

There isn’t any yet.

But with the Feast for the Eyes,

we can get a glimpse of the life of

the Peking ape-men.

Zhoukoudian is famous in the world

as the site the Peking Man.

The vivid likenesses

and replicas of skulls

bring to life the ape-men that existed

500,000 years ago.

The time-honored ornaments of

Upper Cave Men

bear vestiges of the budding primitive arts.

The quests by numerous scientists

gave rise to China’s research

into humans’ distant past.

You look so bad! What’s

wrong with you?

I’m just contemplating a question.

I can never imagine that

a handsome young man as I am

actually come from monkeys!

That’s a simple question.

You come from that kind of

handsome monkeys.

You’re making fun of me again!

All right, no more jokes.

Then have you figured out today’s

prize-giving question?

Yes, I have. Here’s today’s question.
