从前 有一个地方官
A long time ago, a regional official
偶然得到了一只稀有的飞禽
happens to get a rare bird-
天鹅
a swan.
便派一位名叫缅伯高的心腹
He assigns his trusted subordinate,
Mian Bogao,
拿去向皇帝进贡
to send it to the emperor as a tribute.
缅伯高抱着天鹅
With the swan in his arms, Mian Bogao
当他走到湖边时
passes by the lake.
忽然觉得应该停下来
Suddenly, he realizes that he
should pause
给天鹅洗个澡
and give the bird a bath.
就小心翼翼地将天鹅放入水中
Thus he carefully puts the swan
into the water.
不料 天鹅却张开翅膀飞走了
But to his surprise, the swan spreads
its wings and flies away.
只掉下一根鹅毛来
Only a feather of the bird falls down.
缅伯高没有办法捉到天鹅
Mian Bogao has no way to catch the swan.
只好拿着这根鹅毛去面见皇帝
With the swan feather, he goes
to see the emperor.
他害怕皇帝处罚他
Fearing the emperor might punish him,
就对皇上说
he says to the emperor:
陛下 我来向您朝贡 经过了千山万水
“Your Majesty, I’ve traversed mountains
and rivers to present a tribute to you.
可天鹅飞走了
But the swan flew away.
我悲痛欲绝
It was with the greatest sorrow
今天来面见陛下
that I came to see Your Majesty.
请您饶了我缅伯高吧
Please pardon me, Your Majesty.
再说 千里送鹅毛
Besides, a swan feather sent from
a thousand li
礼轻情意重啊
carries profound feelings despite
its lightness.”
皇帝听后 觉得有道理
Hearing this, the emperor thinks what
Mian said was reasonable.
便饶了缅伯高
He thus decides to pardon Mian Bogao.
