好啊
“Good.”
荀子拿过竹简仔细观看
Holding the bamboo-slip book in his hand,
Xunzi reads the essay carefully
眉头渐渐地皱了起来
and then frowns gradually.
这篇修改好的文章
“I see little difference between
this revised version
和昨天写的没有多大差别
and the one you wrote yesterday.
甚至连犯的错也一样
And the errors here are the same
as well.
你看这里 还有这里
Look here and there.”
老师真是了不起啊
“Master, you are really great.
看来我是一辈子
It seems
也达不到老师这样的水平啊
I’ll never reach your level of perfection
all my life.”
你这样想就错了
“You are wrong to think so.
老师也不是生来就会写文章的
I am not a born writer.
学习是一个积累知识的过程
Learning is a process of accumulation.
你不可能一天之内把所有的书读完
You cannot read all books in a
single day.
更不可能一下子
Neither can you understand
把书里面的内容全部掌握

看到一个石匠
see a mason
正在一凿凿地雕刻一块石头
chiseling a stone.
你看那个石匠
“Look at that mason.
他正在凿刻一个雕像
He is sculpting a statue.
他每天这样一凿一凿
He chisels like this every day
不停地雕刻下去
and sculpts incessantly.
就算那块石头再坚硬 再巨大
No matter how hard and how big
the stone is,
也会被他雕刻成精美的雕像
he’ll sculpt it into a beautiful statue.
但是 如果他中途放弃了
But if he gave it up halfway,
就什么也不会得到了
he’d get nothing in the end.”
老师 我明白了
“Master, now I understand.”
锲而不舍：
“Qie er bu she”,
“锲”是雕刻的意思
“qie” meaning to cut or chisel
“舍”是停止的意思
and “she” meaning to stop,
这则成语的意思是不停地雕刻
literally means to chisel incessantly.
比喻只要持之以恒
Metaphorically it also means that
as long as one works
坚持不懈
perseveringly,
就一定能取得成功
he or she will succeed.
