就是这个意思

春秋时期

During the Spring and Autumn Period,

鲁国有一个叫曾参的学者

there is a scholar called Zeng Shen

in the State of Lu,

是孔子的得意弟子

one of Confucius’s favorite disciples.

他生活十分贫困

He lives in poverty.

家里经常揭不开锅

Often his family doesn’t have

anything to cook.

他曾经连续十年

For ten years running,

没有穿过一件新衣服

he hasn’t had any new clothes

to wear.

但曾参却有种穷而不改其乐的品格

But despite his poverty, Zeng Shen retains

十分高尚

his noble character of being optimistic.

一次 他的朋友来了

Once, one of his friends comes

for a visit.

曾参仍然穿着破衣烂鞋和朋友会面

Zeng Shen receives his friend still

in tattered clothes and shoes.

曾参 你的帽子怎么戴歪了

“Zeng Shen, you’re wearing

your hat askew.

快正一正吧

Why don’t you put it right?”

不行啊 我稍微动一下

“Oh, no. If I touch it slightly,

带子就要断了

the strap will snap.”

你看你的衣服也太短了

“Your clothes are a bit too short.

身体都露在外面了

Some of you body parts

are still exposed.

往下拉一拉吧

You’d better pull them down

a little bit.”

你瞧 我要把衣襟拉下来

“Look, if I pull down my jacket,

胳膊肘就露出来了

my elbows will be exposed.”

先生何必过得如此辛苦呢

live such a hard life.

像您这样有才学的人

去皇帝那里做个官

can work as an official for

the emperor

或者给诸侯当谋士

or be an adviser for any

duke or prince.

您不就富贵了么

“Poverty doesn’t upset me.

我只想自由自在地生活

I only want to lead a free life.”

就这样 曾参每天开心地引吭高歌

Thus, Zeng Shen keeps singing happily

every day.

后来 有人说

Later, people say

曾参为了培养自己的心志

Zeng Shen is so intent on

his personal cultivation

都已经忘掉自己的穿着打扮了

he ignores his personal attire.

“捉襟见肘”这则成语

The idiom “zhuo jin jian zhou”

原意是指人衣服破烂

literally means ragged clothes

生活十分穷困

and a life of poverty.

现在比喻顾此失彼

It is used as a metaphor for

being unable

应付不过来

to attend to everything at

the same time.
