I’m reciting Lu You’s poem
“Phoenix Hairpin”.

就是《钗头凤》啊
“Phoenix Hairpin” is a poem.
我进沈园大门的时候
When I entered Shenyuan Garden,
就听很多游客在讲什么陆游啊
I heard many visitors talking
about something like Lu You
什么凤的
and some sort of phoenix.
刚想过来问你呢
I just wanted to come over
and ask you about it.
这《钗头凤》是陆游写的一首词
“Phoenix Hairpin” is one of
Lu You’s poems.
其实 这首词还跟一个爱情悲剧有关
In fact, this poem is related to
a tragic love story.
每个来沈园的人啊
Every visitor to Shenyuan Garden
都会被这段爱情悲剧所打动的
would be moved by this tragic
love story.
要是他们两个能破镜重圆
How wonderful it would be
那该多好啊
if a broken mirror could be
rejoined together!
南朝时期的陈国
In the state of Chen during
the Southern Dynasties,
有个才子叫徐德言
there is a talented man called
Xu Deyan.
他娶了陈朝的乐昌公主为妻
He marries Princess Lechang.
婚后两人十分恩爱
They lead a happy life after
their marriage.
不久 隋文帝杨坚发兵攻打陈朝
Soon afterward, Emperor Yang Jian
of Sui launches an attack on Chen.
徐德言被迫要与妻子分开
Xu Deyan has to leave his wife.
我们今天分别
“We are going to part today.
不知什么时候才能相见
I don’t know when I’ll see
you again.”
这时 徐德言突然折断一面铜镜
Xu Deyan breaks a bronze mirror
将其中一半递给妻子
and gives one half to his wife.
将来 你一定要在正月十五那一天
“You must sell this half mirror
on the market
将这半片镜子在街上出售
on the 15th day of the
first month.
假若我也幸存人世
If I am still alive,
我会通过铜镜去打问你的消息
I’ll try to find out about you
through the mirror.”
那你可一定要来找我啊
“You must come and
look for me.”
陈朝被隋灭亡后
Chen is conquered by Sui.
乐昌公主被赐给了大将军杨素
Princess Lechang is granted
to General Yang Su.
第二年的正月十五
The following year, on the
15th day of the first month,
徐德言千辛万苦回到京城
Xu Deyan returns to the capital after
overcoming many difficulties.
在街市上
On the street market,
果然有一个老人在卖半块铜镜
he does see an old man selling
a half mirror.
徐德言拿出自己那一半镜子
Xu Deyan takes out his own
half mirror
正好合在一起
and finds them fit perfectly together.
消息传到了乐昌公主那里
The news is passed on to
Princess Lechang.
她啼哭不止
She cries incessantly.
杨素了解原委后也非常感动
After learning all the details,
Yang Su is deeply moved.
他找来徐德言
He sends for Xu Deyan
把乐昌公主还给他
and returns Princess Lechang
to him
并送给他们许多钱物
while giving him a lot of
money and valuables.
一对恩爱夫妻终于破镜重圆
Thus this loving couple
becomes reunited.
“破镜重圆”这则成语的意思是
The idiom “po jing chong yuan”,
a broken mirror joined together,
比喻夫妻离散或破裂后
is used as a metaphor for a happy
reunion of a separated couple
又重新和好 团圆
or a broken marriage.
