Coming to Shaoxing, we should
certainly taste the rice wine there.
绍兴黄酒之所以天下闻名
Shaoxing rice wine is famous
凭借的就是精心挑选的原材料
just because its carefully chosen
raw materials
以及独特的酿造工艺
and its unique brewing technique.
别忘了 正宗的绍兴黄酒
Don’t forget that the authentic
Shaoxing wine
一定是用鉴湖水酿造的
must be made with water
from Jianhu Lake.
万古名桥出越州
As the saying goes: “Zhejiang is
home to famous ancient bridges”,
形形色色的古桥是绍兴的一大特色
one of Shaoxing’s significant features is
its various types of ancient bridges,
纤道桥 八字桥 题扇桥
such as the Towpath Bridge, the
Bazi Bridge and the Tishan Bridge.

when rocks were quarried from here.

Jianhu Lake was originally an
ancient water conservancy project.
而今的鉴湖
But today’s Jianhu Lake
虽然面积已经比过去缩小了不少
has dwindled considerably
compared to the past.
但是美丽的风光却从未改变
Nevertheless, its beautiful scenery
remains unchanged.
安昌古镇
The ancient town Anchang was
曾是一座繁华的商贸重镇
once an important prosperous
hub of commerce and trade.
直到如今 十里长街
Even today, on this 5-kilometer street,

visitors can still see old-style
dwelling houses
还有中国银行的旧址
and the site of a former Bank
of China building.
都在向人们述说古镇过去的繁华
They all bear witness to the town’s

在宋代的时候
During the Song Dynasty,
史学家司马光奉命编辑史书
historian Sima Guang is under
orders to compile
《资治通鉴》
“The Comprehensive Mirror for
Aid in Government”.
他知道编辑《资治通鉴》
He knows the compilation work
是个浩大而艰巨的工程
is huge and difficult project.
于是 司马光严格要求自己
So Sima Guang is very strict
with himself.
每三天一定要修改一卷
He requires himself to edit one
volume every three days.
夏天闷热
In the humid and stifling summer,
司马光就让人在屋子里挖一个大坑
Sima Guang asks people to dig
a big pit in his room
砌成一间地下室 在那里工作
and build a basement for him
to work in.
还特地给自己做了一个圆木警枕
He also has a special pillow
made with a log
就是让自己不能睡得太安稳
so that he will sleep vigilantly
以便早点起来工作
and get up in the morning early.
十几年过去了
After ten odd years,
司马光修改过的书稿
the books and scripts that have
been corrected by Sima Guang
堆满了整整两间屋子
pile up high in two full rooms.
一次 司马光问他的好友邵雍
Once, Sima Guang asks his
friend Shao Yong:
我的朋友里您最了解我了
“Of all my friends, you know
me best.
您看我是怎样的一个人呢
What kind of man do you
think I am?”
先生是一个踏实认真的人
“You are a down-to-earth
and serious man.”
您是在赞美我吧
“Are you praising me?”
当然不是了
“Of course not.
您自从编辑
Since you started compiling
《资治通鉴》以来
“The Comprehensive Mirror
for Aid in Government”,
十几年如一日 从不懈怠
you’ve never let up even
for a single day.
我看过您几百卷的书稿
I’ve read hundreds of volumes
you edited.
资料翔实 前后脉络分明
The data is adequate and accurate,
the thread of thought clear
语言文字也极为简练
and the language concise.
文字全部是用工笔楷书写成的
You wrote all the volumes in
the standard script,
没有一个草字
without a single cursive character,
可见您是一个脚踏实地的人哪
which shows you are a down-
to-earth man!”
司马光为编写《资治通鉴》
Sima Guang devotes all his
time and energy
投入了全部的精力
to the compilation of “The Comprehensive
Mirror for Aid in Government”,
为后世留下一部伟大的史学著作
a great historical work for posterity.
“脚踏实地”这则成语比喻
The idiom “jiao ta shi di” means
办事或做学问踏踏实实
a down-to-earth
实事求是 不浮夸
or honest.
