about Luoxing Pagoda.

这个传说我知道

I know this story.

据说 有一位柳七娘

It is said there was a lady

called Liu Qiniang.

她美丽动人

She was very beautiful.

地方上的恶霸为了占有她

A local despot framed her husband

诬陷了她的丈夫

in order to possess her.

最后 她的丈夫不幸遇害

In the end, her husband

was murdered.

于是 柳七娘变卖家产

Thus Liu Qiniang sold off

all her property

建造了这座塔

and built this pagoda

寄托了她对丈夫的思念

as a way of remembering

her husband.

嗯 说得没错儿

Yes, exactly.

不过 这罗星塔可不仅仅只是

But Luoxing Pagoda wasn’t built

寄托了柳七娘对丈夫的思念哦

only for Liu Qiniang to remember

her husband.

那还有什么用途呢

Did it serve any other purposes?

早在七百多年前

As early as 700 years ago,

这罗星塔

Luoxing Pagoda

就已经是国际公认的航标了

was already an internationally

recognized navigation mark

也是闽江的门户标志

as well as a landmark at the gateway

into the Minjiang River.

这我还真不知道呢

This week, we set off from

Sandu’ao

途径马尾 最后到达了福州

and passed through Mawei before

we arrived in Fuzhou.

三都澳景色优美

Sandu’ao has beautiful scenery

素有“海上明珠”之称

and is billed as a “Bright Pearl

on the Sea”.

岛上有许多形态各异的礁石岸坞

The island has many docks between

steep reefs.

七百多平方公里的三都澳

Sandu’ao covers an area of more

than 700 square kilometers.

有着上万公顷的渔排

The fish farming pontoons that occupy

10,000 hectares of water area

为三都澳增添了

constitute an additional

又一道亮丽的风景线

attractive landscape of Sandu’ao.

马尾是历史上

Mawei was the location

清政府开办船政和兴修造船厂的地方

of a shipping school and a shipyard

during the Qing Dynasty.

同时 也是中国近代军事工业

It was also the cradle of China’s

early modern military industry

和造船业兴起的地方

and shipbuilding industry.

船政学堂更是为中国

The shipping school here

培养了大量军事和工业人才

trained a large number of military

and industrial personnel.

一直到二十世纪初

Until the early 20th century,

这里仍然是中国最重要的

Sandu’ao remained as one

of China’s

工业生产基地之一

most important industrial

production bases.

寿山石是福州的特产之一

Shoushan stone is one of

Fuzhou’s special products.

可以用来雕刻人物

It can be used as material for

stone carvings of human figures,

动物 花鸟 山水风光

animals, flowers and landscapes and

以及其他多种艺术品

as material for many other

kinds of objects of art,

具有非常高的欣赏和收藏价值

which have high ornamental

collection values.

福州到处都是榕树

Fuzhou is home to Banyan trees.

所以还有一个好听的名字

For this reason, Fuzhou is

also known

叫榕城

as Rongcheng, the City of

Banyan Trees.

福州有着优美的风光

Fuzhou has beautiful scenery

和悠久的人文历史

as well as a long historical

and cultural tradition.

尤其是城中的三坊七巷

This is particularly true of

the Ten Alleys area.

自古以来

Since ancient times,

无数名人从这里走出来

it has turned out many

famous people.

不愧是这个千年古城

Fuzhou is deservedly a

1,000-year-old city,

历史和文化的精髓所在

a city that has all the quintessence

of history and culture.

渊源 你知道吗

Yuanyuan, do you know

林则徐就是福州人

Lin Zexu was a native

of Fuzhou?

林则徐就是清朝时期

Was Lin Zexu that hero

who set on fire

销毁鸦片的大英雄吧

large amounts of opium in

the Qing Dynasty?

没错儿

Exactly.

不过 虽然林则徐销毁了鸦片

But despite his destruction

of opium,

但是还是遭到了不公正的待遇

he suffered unjust treatment

受到了清政府的指责

and was reproached by the

Qing government.

把他发配到了新疆

He was later banished

to Xinjiang.

那也太过分了吧

The Qing government went

too far!

好在林则徐一点儿都不在意

But Lin Zexu cared little

about it.

到了新疆之后呢

After his arrival in Xinjiang,

他还是一心一意地

he continued to do nice things

for the people

为老百姓做了很多好事

whole-heartedly.

是不是像成语说的那样

There is an idiom describing

this kind of situation,

忍辱负重啊

“ren ru fu zhong”, right?

没错儿

Exactly.

三国时期

During the Three Kingdom Period,

蜀王刘备为夺回荆州

despite the opposition of

his subordinates,

不顾部下的反对

the Shu King Liu Bei sent troops

to attack the Kingdom of Wu

出兵攻打东吴

in order to recapture Jingzhou.

当时 统领东吴军队的大都督叫陆逊

The Supreme Commander of the

Wu army is Lu Xun.

陆逊见刘备的军队来势汹汹

Seeing Liu Bei’s troops bearing

down menacingly,

就决定坚守城池

Lu Xun decides to hold fast

to the city and

不主动出兵

not to take the initiative to

send out troops.

我们的粮草充足 城池坚固

“We have sufficient supplies

and our city is impregnable.

不必与敌人硬拼

We don’t have to fight

tit for tat.

到时候我自有退敌的办法

I have my stratagem to

defeat the enemy.”

可是 陆逊手下一些老将军

But some senior generals

under Lu Xun

以为他胆小怕战 都很气愤

think he is timid and are

very angry with him.

不愿听从陆逊的指挥

They are unwilling to obey

his orders.

哼 胆小怕事的小娃娃

“Huh, a timid and overcautious

young man!

不知道为什么吴王

Why did the Wu King

让他来统领军队

let him command the troops?”

于是

Thus,

陆逊召集众将军开会

Lu Xun summons a meeting

of all generals.

刘备天下闻名

“Liu Bei is famous in China.

现在他带重兵来攻打我们

Now he is leading his troops

to attack us.

希望将军们以大局为重

I hope you generals would place the interests

of the nation above everything else,

同心协力 共同消灭来犯敌人

make concerted efforts and together

wipe them out.

我是个书生

I am an intellectual.

吴王封我为大都督

The Wu King appointed me

Supreme Commander

就是因为我能够忍受委屈

just because I can endure humiliations

负担重任的缘故

and carry out important tasks.

我做大都督 军令如山

As Supreme Commander, my

orders are the highest.

违抗命令的都要按军法处置

Whoever disobeys me will

be court-martialed.

请大家切勿违犯军令

Please don’t violate any

military orders!”

陆逊这一席话

Lu Xun’s statement has pacified

把众将领都给镇住了

all these generals.

从此 再没人敢不听从他的命令了

And ever since, no one has

dared to disobey him.

后来 陆逊巧用计谋

Later, Lu Xun uses a stratagem

大败蜀军 打败了刘备

and defeats the Shu army

and Liu Bei.

“忍辱负重”这则成语表示

“Ren ru fu zhong” is an idiom.

能够忍受委屈 担负重大责任

It means to endure humiliation and

injustice to carry out important tasks.
