战国时代

During the Warring States Period,

齐威王受到一些大臣的蒙蔽

the King of Qi is hoodwinked

by some of his ministers

听不到其他正确的意见

and cannot hear correct opinions.

相国邹忌向齐威王讲了

Prime Minister Zou Ji tells

the king

自己亲身经历的一件事

about something he experienced himself.

一天 邹忌问妻子

One day, Zou Ji asks his wife:

我与美男子徐公相比谁更美呢

“If you compare me with the handsome

Xu, who is more handsome?”

当然是你了

“Of course it is you.

徐公怎么比得上你呢

Mr. Xu is no match for you!”

邹忌又去问妾

Then Zou Ji goes and asks

his concubine.

徐公怎有您美呢

“Xu can’t be as handsome

as you!”

朋友有事来求他

When a friend comes to

ask a favor of him,

邹忌又问这个问题

Zou Ji asks the same question.

徐公不如你美

“Xu is not as handsome

as you are.”

有一天 徐公来拜访邹忌

One day, Mr. Xu came to

visit Zou Ji.

邹忌仔细打量比较

Zou Ji looked at him carefully

and compared

感到自己确实不如徐公美

felt he is not not as

handsome as Mr. Xu.

我本来不如徐公美

“I know I am not as handsome

as Xu.

妻说我美是爱我

My wife said I was more handsome

because she loves me.

妾说我美是敬我

My concubine said I was handsome

out of their respect for me.

朋友说我美是有求于我

My friends said I was handsome

because they wanted my help.

您是一国的国君

You are the king of the state.

有谁敢不敬畏您

Who dares disrespect you?

而且 齐国地方这么大

Besides, the Kingdom of Qi

is so big.

大王接触的人也比我多得多

Your Majesty, you must have met

more people than I have.

所受的蒙蔽也一定更多

So you must have been deceived

more often than I have.

大王如果能多听听批评的意见

If you could hear more critical opinions,

一定对国家有益啊

it would be good for the country.”

齐威王连声称是 立即下令

The Qi King agrees with him.

He issues an order.

不论是谁 能批评我的过失的

“Whoever criticizes my mistakes

一律有赏

will be awarded!”

命令一公布

Soon after the issuance of

the order,

向齐威王提意见和建议的大臣

ministers who want to offer opinions

and suggestions to the king

都聚集到了王府门口

gather at the gate of

the king’s palace.

王府门前热闹得像集市一样

The scene in front of the king’s palace

is as bustling as a marketplace.

“门庭若市”这则成语

The idiom “men ting ruo shi”

形容门前的人很多

means there are as many people

at the gate

好像集市一样

as there are at a marketplace.
