Beijing Olympic – World’s fastest women run semifinal

Sunday, October 4th, 2009

Jamaica’s Shelly-Ann Fraser, third fastest after the Women’s 100m round 2, ran the fastest time tonight in the semifinals with 11:00 seconds. She was 0.05s faster than compatriot and first place runner in heat 2, Kerron Stewart, who finished with an 11.05 time. United States’ Muna Lee who ran third fastest tonight was 0.01 seconds behind Stewart.

Fraser cut her time from yesterday by 0.06 seconds from 11.06s to 11.00s. Shelly-Ann Fraser took home a silver medal as part of the 4 x 100m Relay quartet at the 2007 world championships but has yet to win an individual medal in any major events.

Kerron Stewart, favorite before the event, finished first after round 2 where she ran the only time under 11 seconds in the 100m event thus far. Tonight in the semifinals she ran an 11.00s, which puts her second to Fraser. But remember, Steward holds the second best 100m time for 2008 at 10.80 seconds. If she can replicate this at the 100m final later tonight, April 17, 10:25 p.m. (UTC/GMT +8) at the National Stadium, she will be difficult to beat.

Muna Lee said that she, “Didn’t want to give everything yet.” Since she only cut 0.02seconds from her time tonight, where she crossed the finish line second in her heat in 11.06 seconds, it might be fair to expect an even faster time from her in the Final.
