US athlete Brittney Reese leapt farthest in the Women’s Long Jump qualifying round with 6.87m during her Olympic debut on August 19, in Beijing.
Maurren Higa Maggi from Brazil finished in second place with 6.79m, while Lyudmila Blonska of Ukraine followed with 6.76m.
World and Olympic champion Tatyana Lebedeva from Russia ranked fourth with 6.70m. She jumped a personal best of 6.88m this year.
Carolina Kluft from Sweden, reigning Olympic and three-time world champion in the Heptathlon, tied with Lebedeva.
World indoor champion Naide Gomes failed to advance to the next round with a best jump of 6.29m on Tuesday.
Twelve athletes will advance to the Women’s Long Jump final,scheduled for August 22 at 7:20 p.m. (UTC/GMT+8) at the National Stadium.
