Beijing Olympic – Simpson leans into Women’s 200m semifinal

Sherone Simpson of Jamaica was the fastest runner of the Women’s 200m preliminary round 2 at the Beijing Olympic Games on Tuesday, August 19.

Simpson, silver medalist in Women’s 100m here in Beijing, finished with a time of 22.60 seconds, holding off Yuliya Chermoshanskaya from Russia, who clocked 22.63 seconds. Another Jamaican runner Veronica Campbell-Brown finished in 22.64 seconds, the third fastest time in this round.

Two-time world title holder Allyson Felix of the United States came in fourth with a time of 22.74 seconds, tying Kerron Stewart, Jamica’s 100m silver medalist at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

Muna Lee of the United States, who was the fastest runner of the Women’s 200m round 1 clocked 22.83, ranked ninth.

Sixteen athletes will advance to the Women’s 200m semifinals scheduled for 19:55 p.m. (UTC/GMT +8) on August 20 at the National Stadium.
