金鸡岭上的石级路

The steps on the Jinji Mountain

都是用清一色的条石铺成的。

丹霞地貌的石头都是红色的，

你怎么说是青色的呢？

韩佳：我说的清一色不是指一种颜色。

“qing yi se” doesn’t refer to color.

而是比喻全部

It means “whole or completely”,

都是由一种成分构成，

or something composed of the

same element,

或者全部都是一个样子的。

or things completely the same.

大牛：清一色，清读一声，一读一声，色读四声，

“qing yi se”, two first tones, one fourth

tone, means all of the same colour,

but can also be used as metaphor

meaning all made of the same material

or all in the same style.

那金鸡岭就是因为这块石头而得名的。

The Jinji (Golden Chicken) Mountain was

thus named after this stone.

相传它原来是一只会下金蛋的母鸡。

According to legend, this stone was originally

a hen capable of laying golden eggs.

大牛：这就开讲啦？

韩佳：是啊。后来神仙就把它留在了人间，

Yes. Later, gods left it in the earthly world,

让一只刺猬将军看守它。

guarded by a hedgehog general.

大牛：会下金蛋的鸡，那得看好了。

A golden egg laying hen surely needed

韩佳：可不是嘛。这刺猬将军

Yes, indeed. But this hedgehog

general wasn’t

一不留神就让这母鸡给溜走了。

careful enough, which resulted in the

hen’s slipping away.

大牛：溜走了，鸡跑了，那金蛋也别想要了。

As the hen ran away, there would be no

golden eggs any more.

那不是鸡飞蛋打了吗？

That’d be “ji fei dan da” (the hen has flown

away with its eggs broken), right?

韩佳：说得没错。

Exactly.

鸡飞蛋打就是指两头落空，

“ji fei dan da” means ending up

empty-handed in two respects,

什么都没有得到。

ending up a dead loss.

大牛：鸡飞蛋打就是指两头落空，

“ji fei dan da” literally the chicken flies

away and the egg’s broken,

什么都没有得到。

is an expression which means something

is complete failure and all is lost.

鸡飞蛋打。

“Ji fei dan da.”

那后来怎么样了？

What happened later?

韩佳：后来神仙当然很生气了。

The gods were very angry.

于是就把母鸡和刺猬将军

They turned the hen and the

hedgehog general

都变成了石头，

both into stones

让它们永远都跑不了。

to prevent them from escaping.

大牛：那这么说的话，

In that case,

这附近应该有一块像刺猬的巨石啊？

there should be a hedgehog-like stone
