东汉末年

In the late Eastern Han Dynasty,

有位叫边让的人 非常有才华

there was a talented man, called

Bian Rang.

大将军何进听说了

Learning of him, General He Jin

就将他招来 给了他一个小官当

recruited him as a petty officer.

朝廷的一位大臣蔡邕听说了这件事

A court official, Cai Yong, heard about this.

心想 边让这个人才学不凡

He believed Bian Rang was a talent,

应该作更高一些的官

deserving to serve as a more

important officer.

于是他就到何进家里

Thus he visited He Jin

劝说他把边让推荐出去

and advised him to recommend Bian Rang

让他担任再大些的官

for more important positions.

我看边让这个人真是难得的奇才呀

He said he believed Bian Rang

was a very rare talented man.

可他现在担任的这份官职

But the post he was holding was

a bit too low,

就好像是在用煮牛的大锅来煮一只小鸡一样

just like using a big caldron used

for cows to cook a little chicken.

这是大材小用

It’s “da cai xiao yong”.

我现在忧虑的是这个煮牛的大锅没有用来煮牛

He said he was worried that this big

caldron wasn’t used for cooking cows.

希望将军仔细考虑一下

He suggested that the general consider

给边让一个施展才能的机会

giving Cai Rang an opportunity to

fully display his talent.

The general accepted Cai Yong’s advice.
