Learn to speak Chinese.
It’s easy and fun.
Hello, everyone, you’re watching
Happy China.
I’m the merry Han Jia.
And I’m the happy Daniel.
Daniel, have you ever heard of the
Great Water Wall in China?
Great Water Wall?
I know the Great Wall of China.
The Great Water Wall
is what I’ve heard of for the first time.
The Great Wall built by ancient Chinese
is considered a miracle in the world.
And the Great Water Wall is another
miracle created by modern Chinese.
Han Jia, come on,
what is the Great Water Wall after all?
It’s a canal dug by the people
of Linzhou.
It’s called the Red Flag Canal.
Just a canal, and you said it was
a miracle in the world.
Seeing is believing. And you won’t
forget it after you see it.
Han Jia, the mountains here are
very high.
Didn’t you say you’d show me the
Red Flag Canal?
Why did you take me here to climb
the mountain?
A surprise?
The canal was built right in the Taihang
Mountains.
Why was it built on the mountains?
You’ll find it out a bit later.
See, that’s the Red Flag Canal
in front of us.
It’s simply amazing!
On such steep mountains,
how could they build such a wide canal?
Indeed. It looks just like a green
ribbon winding
through the Taihang Mountains.
Hóngqíqú jiù xiàng yì tiáo lǜsè de piāodài chánrào zài tàiháng shān jiān
The Red Flag Canal is like a green ribbon
which winds through the Taihang mountains.
Indeed. It looks just like a green
ribbon winding
through the Taihang Mountains.
Han Jia, how long is the canal?
With the trunk and branches put together,
the canal is 1,500 kilometers
in total length.
If a wall was to be built, 2 meters
wide and 3 meters high,
with the earth and stones that
were dug out,
it would be long enough to run from
Harbin in the north
right to Guangzhou in the south.
No wonder the Red Flag Canal is called
the Great Water Wall of China.
Han Jia, why did the local people in
Linzhou want to build the canal?
Because of the lack of water resources,
there was drought almost every
year here,
making life extremely hard for
local people.
To get rid of poverty,
they decided to divert water in the
outlying areas
to Linzhou with a canal.
A good idea.
Which river is the source of the
Red Flag Canal?
The Zhanghe River.
You see, down there is the
Zhanghe River,
right at the foot of the Canal.
Han Jia, as the saying goes, man
endeavors to rise
and water flows downwards.
Rén wǎng gāo chù zǒu, shuǐ wǎng dī chù liú.
People go up,water flows down.
How did the Linzhou people manage
to divert the Zhanghe water
up to the Red Flag Canal?
In 1960, people of Linzhou walked
scores of kilometers
to the upper reaches of the Zhanghe
River to start digging the canal.
They seemed to have displayed a
spirit of “wu suo wei”(indifference).
Daniel, you used a wrong word here.
It’s not “wu suo wei”, but “da wu wei”.
“da wu wei” means “fearless”,
especially when faced with hardships
and difficulties.
Yes, correct. That’s right.
The people of Linzhou displayed a
fearless spirit.
The Tiger Mouth Cliff is a very
dangerous place.
Not to mention digging a canal on it,
just standing here and looking up
has made my heart beat faster.
Daniel, look there.
That’s Shengongpu (magic workmen’s
workshop).
In those years, workers lived right
on those cliffs.
So, living in that Tiger Mouth
must have been very difficult
and dangerous.
But the intrepid canal builders
were very optimistic.
They ad-libbed some doggerels
of their own.
Doggerels of their own?
Just tell us what kind of doggerel it is.
Well, listen.
The cliff is my house and the stone
my bed.
I live and work in the Tiger Mouth.
For the wellbeing of our future generations,
We won’t go home until the canal’s
completion.
It’s a good rhymed verse indeed.
Then how long did it take to build
the canal?
Hóngqíqú dàodǐ xiūjiànle duō cháng shíjiān?
How long did it take to complete
the Red Flag Canal?
Then how long did it take to build
the canal?
It started in 1960
and was completed in 1970.
For a full ten years’ time!
Later generations should set up
a monument
to commemorate those heroes.
You’re right.
In fact, the Taihang Mountains
has already prepared a monument for them,
a mountain monument.
I understand the mountains themselves
are the monument.
You’re right.
Only such a monument can match
the spirit of the Red Flag Canal displayed
by Linzhou people.
The spirit of Red Flag Canal?
What kind of spirit is it?
Dear viewer friends, you also want
to know?
Please stay tuned to our program tomorrow,
“A Tour of the Red Flag Canal”.
Don’t forget our motto:
Learn to speak Chinese. And you’ll have
friends wherever you go.
The Red Flag Canal flows in Linzhou city
of Henan Province.
It was built for the purpose of solving the
area’s water shortage and ridding poverty.
The surrounding natural scenery is
beautiful and breathtaking.
The Red Flag Canal looks like a jade belt,
inlaid in the imposing Taihang Mountains.
This Water Great Wall, as it was once called,
has become a tourist attraction as well,
showing its unique beauty to the world.

Janie and Li-an are talking in their apartment building hallway
Li-an: I have seen you around a lot since your little one was born. Aren’t you still working?
Janie: Nah, I decided to take some time off and take care of Jake.
Li-an: Really? That surprises me. Weren’t you, like, a senior executive in your company?
Janie: I was, yes. And I was looking at another promotion. It wasn’t an easy decision.
Li-an: So, why’d you do it? I mean, can’t your parents help you with child care?
Janie: Maybe they could, but they both still work, too. So that wasn’t really an option.
