Learning Chinese is easy and fun.
Welcome to this edition of Happy China.
I am the happy Han Jia.
And I am the happy Daniel.
Today, we are at Shixing in Shaoguan
to learn Chinese with you.
We seem to have visited
I remember seeing such enclosed
houses of the Hakka people before.
Yes, right at Shixing. The Hakkas are
a big Chinese community.
Traditional Hakkas tend to stick together,
living in tall buildings connected to
one another in an enclosed area.
Yǒu cūn bì yǒu wéilóu, wú wéi bù chéng cūn.
有 村 必 有 围楼，无 围 不 成 村。
All villages have an enclosed house,
without an enclosed house there is no village.
Needless to say we’re going to see
such houses once again today.
Yes, even bigger than those we
saw last time.
“Mantang Hakka Manor House”.
Wow, rows upon rows of houses.
There must be a lot of rooms,
at least several dozen of them.
Mantang Hakka Manor House
consists of 777 rooms.
One room a day, it would take one
two years to use all those rooms.
That’s way too many.
Now we’ve come to the second feature
of such houses.
It’s a rule among the Hakkas that
no different families should live
in the same compound.
They built such big houses
so that all members of the family
could live together.
They must have been wealthy families.
Exactly. The owner of this compound
was Guan Qianrong, a wealthy man
during the Qing Dynasty.
He took 28 years to have the
compound built for him.
The Mantang Hakka Manor House is
the No. 1 Hakka Residence in
It is also the biggest and most
stylish of some
200 such buildings still in existence
It surely deserves to be called the No. 1
Hakka Residence in southern China.
What a large house!
Not just one house. This Hakka courtyard
consists of three buildings of different
heights, connected with each other.
What we see now is the middle building.
Then we’d better start from here.
Wait a minute, we must see clearly that
there are five gates in succession.
Zhèli guāng shì dà mén jiù yǒu wǔ dào.
这里 光 是 大 门 就 有 五 道。
There are five consecutive gates.
Five gates? How come there should
be so many?
The most exterior gate is an iron gate.
The second gate is a wooden palisade.
The third is a vertical sliding gate.
The fourth should be latching rods
made of castiron.
And the fifth is the so-called leisure gate,
similar to that we use as a screen
door or window.
Oh, we’ve finally entered.
Daniel, are you calculating the
No, I’m trying to figure out how old the …
Since its completition,
it should have been more than 170
But, look at the wall.
It’s still as smooth as a newly built wall.
That’s the third feature of this building.
It shows fine workmanship.
Look at these gray bricks.
They were all finely polished by hand.
A worker was able to polish no more
than three a day.
And they had to make them identical
both in size and thickness
so as to fit them closely together.
What does “yan si he feng” mean?
“yan si he feng” means a perfect
a joining without the slightest seam.
“yan si he feng” means to fit,
just like the pieces
in a jigsaw puzzle.
“yan si he feng”.
This building is special not only
because of its fine workmanship,
but also because of the materials
The door and window frames,
as well as the marble slabs used
for the steps,
were all bought from other places.
So the Mantang Hakka Manor House
is indeed an example of fine workmanship
and superb selection of materials.
Kèjiā dà wéi zhēn shì zuò gōng jīngxì, xuǎn cái jiǎngjiu.
客家 大 围 真 是 做 工 精细， 选 材 讲究。
The Hakka enclosed houses display fine
workmanship and a superb selection of materials.
But the most incredible material they
used is invisible now.
What material they used?
It’s in the foundation.
The manor house was built on a
sandbank between two rivers.
So they used pinewood as the foundation.
A wooden foundation soaked in water?
Would it be firm? I’d better leave.
Hey, where are you going?
I’d show our audience the Feast
for the Eyes.
As a matter of fact, the longer the pinewood
is soaked in water, the more durable
Look, how frightened Daniel is.
Daniel definitely has many demerits
as well as merits.
Third, having sneaked away
without speaking the motto.
Learn to speak Chinese and you’ll
have friends all over the world.
The Mangtang Hakka Manor House was first built in the
16th year during the reign of Daoguang of the Qing Dynasty.
It is acclaimed as the No. 1 Enclosed Hakka
Residence in southern China.
With a total of 777 rooms,
this imposing residence was built
on a large scale.
It shows fine workmanship and superb
selection of materials.
Every detail exudes a strong flavor of life,
displaying a unique local architectural style.
Any travel agent can tell you what the average rainfall will be and where the best tourist destinations are, but that doesn’t help much. Ask around to find out if anyone you know has been there. Ask the travel agent for any less tourist oriented information and check libraries and bookstores. Make sure you pack toiletries, medicines, and personal items before you leave. Sure, you can find a lot of things in the new country, but the brands and ingredients might be different and confusing, so go prepared. That will make it easier when you eventually do have to do some shopping.
