My legs are still aching

after we climbed Phoenix Mountain.

But we’re going to climb again today!

What? Are you asking what we’re

going to climb today?

We’re going to climb the Great Wall.

However, as Han Jia said,

climbing this section of the Great

Wall is quite meaningful.

How meaningful?

Perhaps, you’ll find out after the climb.

Learn Chinese the fun way and have

a Happy Journey across China.

Hello! I’m Merry Han Jia.

Hello there!

I’m Happy Wang Yuanyuan.

This is our destination for today,

the Hushan Great Wall.

Next, we’re going to have a look

on top of the Hushan Great Wall.

Han Jia, Yuanyuan, come on quickly.

We’re coming.

See you on the Great Wall.

Wait for me.

Han Jia, is the Hushan Great Wall

the eastern end of the Ming Dynasty

Great Wall?

Sh! Don’t say anything about it,

Mr. Guo.

I’ll use it as a test for them

in a moment.

Well, are you all ready?

Get ready for the shooting.

Okay.

Wang Yuanyuan, is this your first

time to climb the Great Wall?

Of course not.

I’ve been to the Great Wall also

at Badaling and Simatai.

Good. Let me give you a test.

Do you know where the eastern

end of the Great Wall is?

Everyone knows that!

It’s Shanhaiguan.

I predicted you would say so.

“Liaodao”? What does it mean?

“Liaodao” here

means to predict or foresee.

For example,

I predicted for sure it wouldn’t

rain this afternoon.

Oh, I see.

“liaodao” means to think of

something in advance.

Now I understand.

Is my answer correct?

Congratulation, it’s wrong!

It’s impossible.

Do you all think my answer is wrong?

It seems to be Shanhaiguan, yes.

Let me tell you all.

The Great Wall’s eastern end

is right here,

the Hushan Great Wall.

Before archeologists proved this,

all people believed

Shanhaiguan was the easternmost

end of the Great Wall.

The fact is you are all wrong.

Wang Yuanyuan said

people would feel the same on different

sections of the Great Wall.

There wasn’t much difference.

But I told him

as long as you observe carefully,

you’ll find each section of the wall

has its own special feature.

这不,

That’s why

he is now looking for the special

feature of the Hushan Great Wall.

Let’s go over and see if we can

help him.

How is it going, Yuanyuan?

I noticed you’ve been looking

around for quite a while,

but haven’t found how special

the Great Wall here is, right?

It’s true I haven’t found it.

But I didn’t take half a day for that.

By “bantian” I mean a long time.

It’s an exaggerated expression.

So you mean that the “bantian” in

the sentence means a long time

and not necessarily half a day.

Exactly.

Let me give you an example

to help you understand it more clearly.

Wǒ kàn le bàntiān yě méi kàn qīngchu

I look for a long time but I still

couldn’t see clearly.

Okay. Since you haven’t found the

uniqueness of the Great Wall here,

let me help you to find it.

Good.

Yuanyuan, come over here.

I’ve found it for you.

Before the Ming Dynasty,

there were no large troops

stationed and

no weaponry stored on the Great Wall.

But this kind of hollow fortresses

solved the probelm.

Oh, but there are also this kind

of fortresses

in other sections of the Great Wall.

This can’t be considered

something special.

That’s for sure.

But the uniqueness of the Hushan

Great Wall, in my opinion,

is the density of such hollow fortresses.

Standing on the Hushan Great Wall,

visitors can have a panoramic view

of Dandong and Sinuiju of the DPRK.

The Yuchi Island of Korea is right

across from the Hushan Great Wall.

The island divides the Yalu River

into two narrow streams,

one of which serves as the border

between China and Korea.

The narrowest part is only six

to seven meters wide.

So people figuratively call it

Yibukua (One Step Jump).

Han Jia, although it’s called Yibukua,

I am afraid to cross it in one step

doesn’t seem really easy.

Of course not.

It is at least six to seven meters

wide here.

There is a little boat moored

over there.

What about taking a boat to take a

look at the scenery on both sides?

It’s a good idea.

The “zhe” in “tingzhe”, as I said,

is a verbal auxiliary word,

usually all positioned after a verb.

It is used to express the continuation

of an action.

You seem to have said just now

“There is a little boat moored

over there.”

Exactly. We can also say

Àn biān zhòng zhe xǔduō shù qiáng shang guà zhe yìfú huàr

There are many trees planted on the shore.

There is a painting hanging on the wall.

Well, we don’t seem to have

much time left.

Now let Yuanyuan and me take

you for a look

at the beautiful scenery of Yibukua

and the Hushan Great Wall.

The Hushan Great Wall was built during

the Ming Dynasty some 400 years ago.

It is the eastern end of China’s Great Wall.

It crawls on the mountain like

a giant dragon.

On top of the Great Wall,

the visitor can see down below the

while enjoying the scenery on

both sides of the river.

The magnificent time-honored Great Wall

seems to be telling a story about its

changes in the last 100 years.

Well, audience friends,

after the Feast for the Eyes,

we have to continue with our journey.

Do we still have to go? Where

are we going?

We’re going to a place which you’d

never want to part with.

Is there such a place?

Are you kidding me?

Why should I be kidding you?

You’ll find out after we get there.

Coming up next …

We’d like our audience

to answer today’s award-winning question.

Listen carefully. The question is—

Well, next, we’d like to remind you

to continue to watch

our CCTV International’s Chinese

Channel tomorrow

and join us for the Happy Journey

across China.

Our slogan is:

We are leaving!

Chinese Conversation – lesson 483

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

Have you ever really asked yourself why you want to learn a new language? Let’s for the moment forget about the obvious: additional job skill, immigration, travels, studies aboard, academic necessity, etc. Of course, these reasons are valid and motivate us to bury our heads in thick language textbooks and repeat after a monotonous voice on an audiocassette. But I believe we acquire a new language in order to effectively communicate with people not of our country and culture.
