Learn Chinese the fun way.

It’s easy to remember.

Hell there! This is Happy China.

And I am Happy Daniel.

Hey, Han Jia, why are you drinking

pond water here?

Aren’t you afraid of a stomachache?

This is the magic spring water

of Naxi people.

Though people come here to

pay homage every year,

they never pollute the water

sources here.

So the water quality is very good.

And it is directly drinkable.

Really? Let me have a drink, too.

Hey, wait a minute.

What’s the matter?

I haven’t finished what I have to say.

When you drink the magic spring water,

you must drink up all you have

in your container.

You should neither waste it, nor

pour it back.

What! Why didn’t you say that earlier?

Do I have to drink up the whole

ladle of water?

Yes.

Oh, I have drunk too much water.

How could there be such a

strange regulation!

This regulation is intended to

educate people to treasure

natural resources.

Naxi people pay homage to

the Magic Spring

in order to express their determination to

safeguard the forests, birds and animals here.

That sounds reasonable.

But if I had known sooner,

then I wouldn’t have had to drink

so much water.

Wǒ yàshi zǎo zhīdào jiù búyòng hē nàme duō shuǐ le

If I had known sooner then I wouldn’t

have had to drink so much water.

Look.

These ancient trees are quite old.

Eh, Han Jia, does it matter if I

watch these trees?

No, of course not.

These two mono maple trees

are nearly 1,000 years old.

They do deserve to be called

ancient trees.

I’m going over to take a look.

Okay.

Eh, look at the way they are

standing there.

They look as if they were guarding

this spring.

Great!

Hey, Daniel!

What’s the matter?

You can’t touch the trees for

no reasons.

It is said whoever touches the

magic trees

will be punished by nature.

Is it so serious?

Didn’t you say it doesn’t matter?

Fortunately, I didn’t touch them.

Of course, it doesn’t matter if you

just watch them.

But it won’t do if you touch

or push them violently.

This just shows the Naxi people’s

fine tradition of caring for all

forms of life.

They say there is no one who

would even

disturb the bees on the trees.

It is good to care for life in all forms.

This Naxi tradition is really commendable.

Just now I almost made a mistake again.

Eh, Daniel, what do you think of

these fish here?

Of course, they are both plentiful

and beautiful.

They are rainbow trout introduced

from abroad.

People say trout are hard to breed.

They are very fastidious about

their living environment.

Oh, if that’s the case,

the water here must be very suitable

for their growth!

That’s for sure.

The temperature of the water is low

and the water quality is fine.

So the water here is suitable

for their growth.

These fish not only are very

nice to watch,

but also taste very good!

What do you mean? Hungry again?

No, I am not!

Hey, why are you so different today?

I’m upholding the fine Naxi tradition of

caring for life in all forms.

Wǒ shì yào wéihù nàxīzú àihù shēngwù de hǎo chuántǒng

I’m upholding the fine Naxi tradition of

caring for life in all forms.

Oh, now I’m clear.

You are just the “once bitten,

twice shy”

kind of man.

Am I going to be bitten by a snake?

I didn’t eat fish.

You should stand witness for me!

Don’t be nervous. It is just

a set phrase.

It means that

after someone has suffered a

severe blow,

he feels frightened

whenever a similar situation occurs.

Oh, I see.

I was scared to death.

“Yizhao bei she yao shi nian

pa jingsheng”

means once bitten,

twice shy.

Han Jia, we’d better leave now,

in case something wrong happens.

There is indeed a very nice place.

I’m going to take you there. Come on.

Seeing the blue water and sky,

now I feel relieved at last.

Lashi Lake is not only beautiful,

there are also many things here which

people don’t usually see elsewhere.

Oh?

Look.

Birds. And many of them!

Yeah, they are exactly those birds.

They are the migrant birds that came

from the north to spend winter here

despite such a long flight.

“bu yuan wan li” describes someone

having no fear of distant journeys.

“Bu yuan wan li”.

“Bu yuan wan li”, literally

having no fear of even 5,000 kilometers,

means to have no fear of distant journeys.

Bù yuǎn wàn lǐ

to have no fear of distant journeys

Why did these migrant birds

fly to this place only?

That’s because

Lashi Lake is a stretch of plateau wetlands.

The excellent geographical and

climatic conditions

are ideal for the habituation of the birds.

It is naturally the migrant birds’ number

one choice for their winter habitat.

Sometimes, the number reaches

80,000 maximum.

So many!

Let’s move over to the other bank

for a look.

Great!

Audience friends,

If you also want to take a look,

please get into today’s Feast

for the Eyes.

The melting snow on the Yulong Mountain

becomes the spring water of Yushui Village.

Lively trout swim in the clear water.

In this tranquil environment,

Naxi people devoutly pray for peace

and happiness.

Surrounded by tall trees,

the Lashi Lake is a safe haven for birds

migrating from the north.

Having seen these migrant birds,

now it’s time again for our audience

to answer the day’s question.

Today’s question is like this.

Hey, what are you listening to?

Hush! I’m listening to the birds’

conversation.

Can you understand them?

Yeah.

What did they say?

They all said,

Learn chinese.

And make friends everywhere!

Hey, you also understand them!

Yeah.

Chinese Conversation – lesson 474

Tuesday, June 16th, 2009

Kathy: And don’t forget the fat beauties, like this lady here. [points to a ceramic woman]
Maddie: In the T’ang, this woman with her round body and full face would be very pretty.
Kathy: That is so different than the view of women today.
Maddie: In this next room we can see how the Hui-tsung emperor influenced the arts.
Kathy: I love celadon pieces.
Maddie: Notice how many of these pieces look like bronze vessels?
