Hi there, friends!

I am Happy Daniel.

You mustn’t think I’m strange today.

I heard life on the horse caravan

is interesting.

So I’ve also got a horse with me today

to experience the life with a horse caravan.

Daniel!

Han Jia,

are you also going to join the caravan?

No. In addition to horse caravans,

there are many other interesting

things in Shuhe.

But I still think a horse caravan

is much better.

Now I declare the start of the journey

of our Happy Caravan!

Attention! Be careful!

The Happy Caravan is arriving.

Daniel,

why are you yelling so loud?

Your “jiazi” is a bit too big!

“Jiazi”?

“Jiazi”? I am not bringing any

frame with me?

The “jiazi” I said means

an air of haughtiness and conceit

just like the way you were just now.

Oh, “jiazi”, fourth tone, neutral tone,

means an air of haughtiness or conceit.

架子。

“Jiazi”.

I didn’t put on airs.

I only worried the bridge ahead

is too narrow

and we might hit someone.

The bridge ahead is called the

Qinglong Bridge.

It is the biggest of all ancient

bridges in Lijiang.

I didn’t realize that.

Just rest assured.

You’ll know when you get there.

Wow! Standing on the bridge,

we have a broader view of our surroundings.

Shàng le qiáo shìyě yí xià zi jiù kāikuò qǐ lái le

Standing on the bridge, we have a

broader view of our surroundings.

Talking about the bridge,

it is already more than 400 years old.

It was a landmark

in the heyday of Chieftain Mu.

It also shows Shuhe played

a significant role

in the history of Lijiang.

No wonder Shuhe could have become

an important town on the ancient

Tea-Horse Road.

Yeah.

The title of Ancient Tea-Horse Town

was not given for no reasons.

This bridge is one of the best “pingju”.

“Pingju”? What is “pingju”?

“Pingju” means evidence.

Hearing what you said,

now I can imagine

what a bustling town it must

have been then.

After such a long ride,

my back and waist are getting sore.

Life with a caravan is so tough!

I’d better look for something else

which is more interesting and fun.

Gee, a tanner’s shop?

I think I’d better be a tanner.

Daniel is so impetuous!

Suddenly, he is nowhere in sight.

Gee, Miss Merry Han Jia,

do you want me to make a leather

bag for you?

What! What are you talking about?

I felt the caravan’s life is too tough.

So now I want to be a tanner.

You changed your mind so quickly.

But Shuhe’s leather industry

has been famous for a long time.

Sùhé de pígé jiāgōng lì lái dōu shi hěn chūmíng de.

Shuhe’s leather industry has been

famous for a long time.

It is said that in the past,

the Mu chieftains specially invited

skilled tanners from other

places to Lijiang.

Since then, there has been

leather making

till today.

You shouldn’t doubt my skill.

I won’t damage the reputation

of Shuhe tanners,

who travel around to make a living

by means of a single awl.

Be careful, Daniel!

Daniel,

you’ll have no wage for this month.

What?

The master tanner must have

been biased.

He gave all the work to his children.

You shouldn’t complain.

Tanners here normally

don’t pass on their skills directly

to their children.

They send them away to learn from

their distant relatives.

They won’t return before they have

fully mastered the craft.

Oh, I see.

Then we’d better leave here.

I think I am hopeless here.

The caravan’s life is hard.

And being a tanner requires skills.

What kind of job would be most

enjoyable for me?

Don’t be disheartened.

Come on. Look at this.

What is it?

This is paper engraving made

with Dongba paper.

Well, do you want to learn this craft?

Sure, I certainly want to learn this craft.

It must be easy to learn.

Really? Let’s go over and take a look.

Daniel,

this is the creator of paper engraving,

Mr. Chen Dengyu.

Zhè wèi shì zhǐdiāo de chuàngshǐ rén

This is the creator of paper engraving.

Hi, Mr. Chen!

Hello, Mr. Chen!

Can you give us a demonstration

while you explain to us

how paper engraving is made?

Our Dongba paper engraving

is made by pressing the pulp which is

laid over a wooden board engraved

with Dongba characters.

With such a press,

a relief pattern will appear on the paper!

All right.

Now we are going to let it dry

in the sun?

Yes, we should take it out

to let it dry in the sun.

Audience friends,

I never imagined it’s so easily said

than done.

We shouldn’t just be busy

about ourselves.

We should also find something

for our audience!

That’s easy.

Please watch the Feast for the Eyes.

This ancient town of former tea-horses

has a long history.

But those tea traders and their horses

are no longer in existence.

The hustling visitors

and rows of thriving shops

add new vitality to this old town.

Elegant handicrafts can be seen everywhere.

Dongba paper carving is a unique art.

Today this ancient town

is taking on a new look of prosperity.

Audience friends,

after the Feast for the Eyes,

it’s time again for today’s question.

Please listen carefully.

Today’s question is like this.

Daniel,

now we may take out our work

for our audience to see.

You mean that Dongba character of “jia”?

Exactly.

You see there are also two people

in the house.

Aren’t they vivid?

Does it look like

our big Happy China family?

Now it’s time to chant

our Happy China slogan-

In the Painting Exhibition
Kathy: Oh my. Look at this calligraphy.
Maddie: That’s what I wanted to show you. This is a special style called “slender gold.”
Kathy: The lines are so sharp. The words seem to move in the air.
Maddie: The amazing thing about this is that the calligrapher is a Song Dynasty emperor.
Kathy: Emperor Hui-tsung. I’ve heard of him.
Maddie: He was a great supporter of the arts, but not the best protector of his people.
