Learn Chinese the fun way.

It’s easy to remember.

Welcome to this edition of

Happy China!

I am Merry Han Jia.

And I’m your good friend Daniel.

Today,

together with you, Daniel and

I will be

learning Chinese at the Yongji

Ecological Park of Huizhou.

I heard there are many interesting

things here.

Let’s go and take a look.

Okay.

Han Jia,

I find there are quite a lot

of plants here.

It’d be more suitable to

call it a botanical garden.

I don’t think so.

Why not?

It’s more accurate to call it

an ecological park.

Look at these open-air barbecue

facilities.

I see them.

But they are just open-air barbecue

facilities.

They are not unusual. They can be

found in other places.

I haven’t finished yet.

The trees around the barbecue stoves

are called Indian rubber trees

Their broad leaves

can absorb the harmful substances

in the smoke.

So barbecuing here

is environment-friendly.

Zài zhèli shāokǎo yǒu lìyú huánbǎo.

Barbecuing here is environment-friendly.

I’m learning again.

There are lots of similar examples here.

Let’s move up there to have a look.

Look, Daniel,

these are green-lemon trees

introduced from Thailand.

But growing among them is another

kind of tree.

It called the phoenix tree.

Do you know the advantages

of such inter-planting?

Apart from the fact they look

more beautiful,

I don’t see any other advantages.

Tell me quickly.

Actually looking more beautiful

is truly one of the advantages.

But what’s more important is that

the phoenix trees’ abundant roots

can loosen the soil.

Inter-planting the trees with

lemon trees

can loosen the soil for

the lemon trees

so that they can better absorb nutrients.

It has never occurred to me that

there’s so much knowledge about

planting trees.

That’s why

it’s called an ecological park,

not a botanical garden.

Hearing what you said, I’ve

realized that

everywhere here is seen the awareness

of respect for the rule of nature

and environmental protection.

Here is indeed an ecological park.

But I found

what are growing here are all

plants introduced from abroad.

You are right.

Using hi-tech agricultural

technologies,

people here mainly grow foreign

vegetables and vanilla plants.

How about taking a look inside

a greenhouse?

Good.

What are growing here?

I can’t recognize any of them.

Can you guess what this is?

It looks like both a grape

and a tomato.

What is it exactly?

Tāmen jì xiàng pútáo yòu xiàng fānqié, jiūjìng shì shénme ne?

They look like both grapes and a tomatos.

What are they exactly?

“Jiujing” is an adverb,

meaning “exactly” or “after all”,

the same as “daodi”.

Let me tell you what it is.

This is the cherry tomato introduced

from Israel.

The cherry tomato?

This is the first time I’ve ever

heard of it.

Cherry tomatoes look like tomatoes

but are much smaller than tomatoes.

The red ones taste as sweet

as fruit.

I’d like to taste some.

These are not ripe yet.

Don’t pick them.

I can’t pick any?

Are there any edible right now?

Edible right now?

Yes. Come with me.

Han Jia,

What you said are edible

are actually these chili peppers!

Yeah.

Nǐ shuō de néng chī de jiù shi zhè xiē làjiāo a?

What you said are edible are actually

these chili peppers!

Do you want to have a taste?

Very tasteful

and nutritious as well.

I knew you are making a fool of me.

The chili pepper is very hot.

How can we eat it raw?

We’ve been co-hosts for such

a long time.

How can I fool you?

They are not chili peppers, but

sweet peppers.

And they have a very nice name,

called the colored bell pepper.

It can be eaten as fruit.

You better eat it yourself.

I still want to look for

something delicious.

Poor Daniel! He doesn’t have

a gourmet’s luck.

It tastes great.

Let me tell you a small secret.

The colored bell peppers are

not only edible,

they can be also used as home ornaments,

a real Feast for the Eyes.

The Yongji Ecology Park is situated in

Huidong County in the city of Huizhou.

Here, exotic vegetables, vanilla and other

farm crops are grown using hi-techs.

Advanced farming methods and scientific

field management are applied here.

The awareness of environmental protection

can be seen everywhere.

Every color here is the gift of

Mother Nature.

Spending a moment in this picturesque

place is definitely an enjoyable experience.

I’ve finally found it.

Audience friends,

this is the Japanese sweet strawberry.

It’s high season to eat

such strawberries.

you did find something delicious.

Sure.

I can always get what I want!

It’s a dream come true!

Come on. Let me treat you to strawberries.

That’s neat… No. We haven’t fulfilled

our main task yet.

Oh yeah.
