大牛：今天一大早，

Early this morning,

我养的那条小金鱼死了。

the little goldfish I kept died.

为什么这些小动物寿命这么短呢？

Why do these little creatures live

so shortly?

我总是眼睁睁地看着

散心，“散”读四声，“心”读一声，

韩佳：这海龟湾

The Turtle Bay

一直是海龟产卵的好场所。

has always been an ideal place for

the turtles to lay eggs.

因为这里的沙滩坡度平缓，

Because the sand beach slopes

very gently

沙粒又很细小，

and the sand grains are very fine,

所以特别有利于海龟爬行、挖洞，

it’s quite convenient for turtles

to crawl ashore,

还有产卵繁殖。

burrow holes and lay eggs.

海龟在沙滩上产完卵之后，

After laying eggs on the beach,

立刻就游回大海了。

the turtles would return to

the sea immediately.

大牛：那它们的成活率能不低嘛！

That’s why their survival

rate is so low!

连孵卵都不管哪。

They wouldn’t hatch their eggs.

韩佳：海龟是自然孵化的。

Turtles are hatched naturally.

小海龟出壳以后呢，

After the little turtles break out

of their egg shells,

保护区的工作人员会把它带回基地，

workers at the nature reserve will

take them back to the base camp

然后精心地照顾。

and take meticulous care of them.

大牛：精心，都读一声，

“jingxin”, two first tones,

意思是小心翼翼的。

means meticulous.

精心。

“Jingxin”.

韩佳：我们可以说精心地制作电视节目。

We can say to make TV programs

meticulously.

Wǒmen jīngxīn zhìzuò diànshì jiémù.

We produce TV programs meticulously.

等小海龟长大了，强壮了，

When the little turtles grow up

and become strong enough,

人们就会把它放归大海。

the people here will release them

into the sea.

不过不管海龟游到多远的地方去生活，

But no matter how far they swim away

to live,

成年以后，

when they reach adulthood,

它都会回到原来的出生地来产卵的。

they would return to their birthplace

to lay eggs.

大牛：等等，等等。

Wait a minute.

据我所知，

海龟需要二十到五十年的时间

成年海龟游泳的速度

An adult turtle can swim as fast

可以达到每小时四十公里呢。

as 40 kilometers an hour.

大牛：比我这牛车是快多了！

Much faster than my bull-drawn cart!

来，小海龟呀，

Come on, little turtle,

多吃一点儿快快长大。

eat some more so as to grow faster.

韩佳，这些海龟到底能长多大？

Han Jia, how big will these

有没有比我们刚才看到的还大的呢？

韩佳：赏心悦目里呀。

In the Feast for the Eyes.

赏心悦目：

港口湾是中国惟一的一个海龟自然保护区

The Port Bay is China’s only nature

reserve for sea turtles.

三面环山 一面濒海 环境僻静

It’s a secluded sea area with

mountains on three sides.

海龟–恐龙时代的幸存者

The sea turtle is a survivor from

the dinosaurs’ age.

将这里作为繁衍生息的温床

Here it is an ideal hatching site

for these animals.

这里滩涂平坦宽阔 海沙松软细白

The beach slopes gently and the

white sands is soft and loose.

便于海龟爬行 挖掘和产卵繁殖

It is easy for sea turtles to crawl

ashore and lay eggs to hatch.

受到精心呵护的幼龟从这里被放归大海

These well protected baby turtles

are released into the sea.

若干年后 成年的海龟又返回故里

Many years later, the grownup turtles

would return here

开始新生命的延续

to reproduce their offspring.

韩佳：还哼着小曲呢。

He seems at the moment

是要多好有多好啊。
