To write off (the names of the incompetent officials from the list) at one stroke — To cancel altogether

Fan Zhongyan was a famous statesman and scholar about 950 years ago in the Song Dynasty.  He was honest and upright.  He dared to act, and to assume responsibility for what he did.  When he dealt with state affairs, he resolutely carried out through to the end whatever he thought right.  He paid attention to examining subordinates. When he found anyone incompetent, he wrote off his name from the officials’ name list, and put on the alternate official’s name.

Another official named Fu Bi respected Fan Zhongyan very much. However, when he saw Fan resolutely dismiss those incompetent officials from office, he couldn’t but try to persuade Fan, “You should be sparing when you remove an official.  You can easily write off his name with one stroke. But do you know his whole family will cry bitterly for that?” Fan said “Those incompetent officials must be removed.  Or, he would make many common people cry bitterly along the road.  Tell me, which is better: one family crying or many families crying on the road?”  Fu Bi had nothing to say.

From what Fan Zhongyan did as described by Fu Bi, people got the idiom Yi Bi Gou Xiao  — To write off at one stroke the incapable officials’ names from the list.  As a result of evolution through the years thereafter, usage of the phrase has changed.  It’s now used in a much broader sense and means “to cancel altogether”, referring to anything not desirable.  You can use it to say “to wipe out anything you don’t need, be it feeling of gratitude or resentment, or debts in cash or in blood.

Learn Chinese Podcast – Happy China 467

Friday, April 3rd, 2009

Learn Chinese with fun.

It’s much easier to remember.

I am the happy Han Jia

saying hello to you at Meiling of Jingdezhen.

Hi, Daniel, are you having a contest of strength

with that tree?

I was trying to find out how many people

it would take to encircle this camphor tree

with outstretched arms.

It is so thick.

The nine camphor trees here are

all very old,

averaging more than 500 years old.

Wow! I didn’t expect

to see such old camphor trees at Meiling.

The visit here is an eye-opener for me.

And this tree in particular.

It is over 1,600 years old.

Just now I was trying to embrace it.

Was it a bit impolite?

Eh, don’t you know that

we came to Meiling

not just to see these old camphor trees.

What else?

Please take us to see it.

Come on.

In the past, Meiling was

a marketplace on the border between Jiangxi

and Anhui provinces.

So there are here many

old houses built in the Ming and Qing dynasties.

And today,

we’re going to take a look

at the Zhang Family Ancestral Temple here.

Eh, Han Jia,

this building does look very antique in style.

Zhè zuò jiànzhù zhēn shì gǔ sè gǔ xiāng a.

This really is a classic piece of architecture.

Yeah, absolutely.

“gu se gu xiang” is an adjective,

meaning to have a classical ambience and style.

Yes. “gu se gu xiang” means to have a classical

ambience and color.

“gu se gu xiang”.

This ancestral temple existed as early

as the Tang Dynasty.

The temple we see today

was rebuilt during the early Ming Dynasty.

I learned that the Zhang Family Ancestral Temple

is quite renowned.

Yes, it is deemed as the No. 1 Ancestral Temple

in south China.

Why is it so well-known?

We’d better

get inside and talk about it while we see it.

Wow! I didn’t expect it to be this large inside.

Right. The Zhang Family Ancestral Temple

has three halls and two skylights,

with a total area of 3,000 square meters.

But as you said it is the No. 1 Ancestral Temple,

there must be something else special about it.

Tā de tèbié zhī chù bùzhǐ zhèxiē ba?

That can’t be the only thing which

makes it special.

This ancestral temple has three halls

with five beams.

And plus the nine camphor trees

we saw just now at the entrance,

these numbers

couldn’t have been found

in the houses built previously.

Nine and five.

Eh, these numbers

remind me of the term,

“jiu wu zhi zun”.

Ha, you do know quite a lot.

“jiu wu zhi zun” means the imperial throne.

“jiu wu zhi zun” means the imperial throne.

“jiu wu zhi zun”.

It is said this family ancestral temple

was built with the special permission of

a Ming Dynasty emperor,

using the standards for princes and marquises.

Wow, I didn’t know this temple

had something to do even with the imperial family.

Probably the visit here

would bring me some good luck of fortune.

Stop your fantasy dream!

Let’s be practical and take a stroll along

an ancient Meiling road.

Han Jia, how poorly this road was built!

It’s really uncomfortable to walk on it.

Zhè tiáo lù shì zěnme xiū de , zǒu qilai tèbié bù shūfu.

This pathway is really uncomfortable to walk on,

what where they thinking when they built it.

Want to walk comfortably?

It isn’t impossible.

Oh, tell me how.

Do you really want to know?

Of course, I do.

Come on. Carry my bag on your back.

What?

Come on. Carry it.

Gosh! Why do you want me to carry your bag?

It is very heavy.

Don’t worry.

Walk a few steps first.

Hey, how come, all of a sudden,

I feel I can walk far less uncomfortably?

Of course!

This mountain road was built especially

for men carrying goods up the mountain.

It would be difficult to walk upslope

with a heavy burden.

But with these low steps,

it would be a lot easier to do so.

How smart these ancient people were!

OK, just take your time and walk on.

I’ll be waiting for you ahead

at the Cloud-Watching Pavilion

Hey!

She runs up with her bag on my back!

Audience friends,

this is the Cloud-Watching Pavilion at Meiling.

It is a typical Anhui-style structure.

It used to be a place of rest for those laborers.

If lucky,

people can see many mountain peaks

submerged in the sea of clouds.

Oh, I am so preoccupied with talking.

Where is Daniel?

He is completely gone!

It seems Daniel won’t be back soon.

Let’s watch the Feast for the Eyes

while waiting for Daniel.

Oh, what a dawdling character

Daniel is! Well, I think

I’d better tell you today’s question first.

Oh, my goodness!

Hi, Daniel!

You must be very tired.

I am tired indeed,

But I must say the one last sentence-

and have friends everywhere.

Eh, is it the Guanyunting Bridge?

Yes, it is.

I’m going to take a rest there. Oh, my goodness!
