Thursday morning in Qingdao saw the opening of the Haier Taxi Service Center, one of the city’s six centers available for the upgrading of taxis. According to Qingdao Financial Daily, Global Positioning System (GPS) installments are scheduled for 3,000 taxis this month, after which commuters may phone in for taxi services through the new toll-free hotline.
By the start of the Olympics, 5,000 is the anticipated number of taxis to undergo the upgrade. Before 2009 comes around, the city expects that every taxi in Qingdao will have GPS receivers in their vehicles.
With the system, those needing taxis need only to call the hotline to request one. The operator on hand will notify nearby taxis, providing them with information on the caller’s position, which will show up on the GPS screen, allowing for quick and accurate service.
Global Positioning Systems will not only benefit commuters, they will also help cut the “down-time” experienced by taxi drivers. During off-peak hours, drivers cruise the city looking for passengers; with the GPS notification system, drivers will be able to increase their income by picking up more people faster.
The hotline is only one of the uses of GPS. Service centers are able to track taxis in the case of any wrongdoing, such as unnecessary detours or refusal to pick up passengers. After service center personnel examine the situation, they can notify relevant authorities, providing them with specific information.
Security is a top issue for the taxi industry. With a GPS receiver in the vehicle, if the driver comes across any situation needing help, the push of a button will light up a “SOS” sign at the rear of the taxi, at the same time notifying the police and the service center. The alerted service center can then communicate directly with the police regarding the vehicle’s position.
Not only are the service centers responsible for the GPS upgrade, they are also there to clean and replace seat covers every three days, as mandated by the city, free of charge.
The six centers are spread throughout the city for the convenience of taxi drivers. With plenty of space available to service up to 8 cars at a time, taxis in Qingdao can easily meet ordinance requirements.
