Please tell me

what “ta shi de leg” means.

“Ta shi de leg”

means good luck.

Yeah, you are right. Then what

about “zhaga”?

“Zhaga”? Um …

Ladies and gentlemen,

now it’s Daniel’s impromptu test

of his Tibetan proficiency.

You are not allowed to look

at anything.

Why should I know the meaning

of “zhaga”?

Anyway, I know to learn Chinese

the fun way.

It’s much easier to remember.

Is it okay now?

We should do as the Romans

do when in Rome.

But it doesn’t matter if you

don’t know.

In a moment, we’ll go to see

Zhaga Waterfall.

I guess when we are there,

you’ll understand what “zhaga” means.

Zhaga Waterfall? Didn’t we go

there last year?

Yes.

I remember it should on this side.

No. It’s on this side, this side.

Han Jia, Zhaga Waterfall

left a deep impression on me. Do

you also have some impression?

Of course. But I guarantee that

the impression we’ll have this time

will be “jie ran bu tong”.

Zhècì de gǎnshòu hé shàngcì de kěndìng jiérán bù tóng.

This time feels completely different

from last time.

I know what you mean by “jie

ran bu tong”.

It means two things that are

completely different. Right?

You are right.

“jie ran” means sharply or completely.

“jie ran”, two 2nd tones, means blatantly.

So “jie ran bu tong” describes two things

being completely different.

“jie ran bu tong”.

Come with me. In a moment,

you’ll know how different it is now.

I am the guide.

Okay, I follow you.

Han Jia, stop.

Look, there is some white stuff

on the ground.

It’s so strange.

Your observation is so astute.

This is called snow tea. It tastes a bit

bitter, good for alleviating internal heat.

You mean they are plants growing here?

And they are a kind of tea!

When I first saw them,

I thought someone left them here.

Snow tea is quite good.

It can used as tea

as well as a herbal medicine.

Tā búdàn kěyǐ pàochá ,hái kěyǐ zuò yàocái.

It can be used to make tea and

is also a medicine.

But you’d better stop observing it.

Let’s see something else.

As it’s such nice stuff,

I have to pick some to take home.

Daniel, forget about it. Come

over here.

Guess what it is?

It looks like an ancient tree fossil.

But not exactly like a fossil.

This is a tree stump with calcified

growth rings.

Calcified growth rings?

No wonder I mistook it as a tree fossil.

It has been formed after the

calcified outer

layer was exposed to air and

became oxidized.

Each ring may represent several years

or even dozens of years.

From these calcified growth rings,

we can find out the evolution

of the earth.

Let me count them.

Daniel, stop your counting.

Why not?

I think that looks like Erdaohai Lake.

How could we’ve bumped into

that lake area?

Don’t ask me. You said you

led the way.

You knew clearly I am bad at orientation.

You shouldn’t have let me lead the way.

You guy!

Zhaga Waterfall in this season

is so beautiful!

It’s a magnificent scene of

“yi xie qian li”.

Qìshì pángbó yí xiè qiān lǐ

magnificent, a plummet of a thousand li

Nice put. “xie” refers to water

rushing down.

“yi xie qian li” originally refers to

rivers that rushes downward rapidly

or flooding waters rushing

forward violently.

It’s also used as a metaphor to

describe a piece of writing

being straightforward and smooth.

Daniel, let’s have a competition

to see who can ascend the

waterfall first.

Han Jia, maybe you are better

than I in Chinese.

But I won’t lose to you in this.

You aren’t playing fair.

Ladies and gentlemen,

now let’s enjoy the spectacle

of the world’s biggest travertine

waterfall.

See you later.

The snow-capped mountains tower

nto the sky.

The crystal-clear stream flows gently.

The Zhaga Waterfall is the highest

travertine waterfall in China.

Rushing down a mountaintop,

the waterfall looks like a waterway

extending from the sky

or a multi-layered crystal door curtain.

The splashing droplets are like

beams of jade.

The waterfall is a spectacular sight.

I said I wouldn’t lose.

I let you be smug this time.

But you haven’t told me

what “zhaga” means.

“Zhaga”, I did try to figure it out.

You see the water here is so clear.

I presume “zhaga” should mean

translucent.

Let me tell you

“zhaga” means white in Tibetan

Zhaga Waterfall means a white waterfall.

It’s an apt name.

But I shouldn’t be the only person

for a test.

I know what you mean.

While I was climbing just now,

I also

thought of the question for our

audience today.

Then go ahead.

Thanks for watching our today’s program.

We’ll waiting for you tomorrow

at the same time.

Don’t forget our slogan-

Learn Chinese and have friends everywhere.

Beijing Olympic – Olympic sailing venue intensifies port surveilance

Saturday, March 7th, 2009

Ships visiting or leaving the port of Qingdao, venue of the Olympic sailing event in east China, were under strict safety checks, an official said here Wednesday.

Cargo vessels, especially passenger ships, were undergoing intensified examinations while passing through the port, He Jianzhong, spokesman of the Ministry of Transport, told a press conference at the 2008 Beijing International Media Center.

Local maritime affairs authority has dispatched 62 patrol boats to monitor or provide maintenance services in the water area.

To maintain smooth port traffic, local maritime affairs administration has been restricting the number of entering ships and their navigation speed

The measures will continue during the sailing tournament, which is scheduled on Aug. 9-21, to ensure a safe sports environment as well as normal maritime transportation at the busy port, said He.

The spokesman said all ships for traffic, maintenance and first-aid services have been in place since Aug. 1.
