Learn Chinese with fun.

It’s much easier to remember.

Welcome to this edition of Happy China.

I am the happy Han Jia

and very pleased to see you.

And I am the happy Daniel.

Today we’re going to continue to

learn Chinese in Songzhou.

No. I want to listen to songs first.

Listen to songs?

Look at Daniel. He is typically

“ru chi ru zui”.

Han Jia what did you say?

You are not saying something bad

about me, are you?

Not at all. I said the multi-part

ethnic Qiang

folk song was so beautiful

that it has made you “ru chi ru zui”.

Zhè míngē tài měi le, rang nǐ tīng dé rú chī rú zuì.

This folk song is beautiful,people

listen enchanted.

“ru chi ru zui” means to be infatuated

or totally absorbed.

It’s a most suitable word for

describing you just now.

I am sorry to have wronged you.

“ru chi ru zui” means infatuated

or bewitched.

“ru chi ru zui”.

Oh, yes. I heard just now

this kind of folk songs is passed down

by mouth only. Is it true?

It is true

as the Qiang people’s multi-part

folk songs

are very old

and the Qiang people don’t have their

written language

though they do have their own language.

This kind of folk songs

is passed down by mouth generations

after generations

to this day.

After I heard their multi-part singing,

their song seems to be still lingering

in my ears.

I feel the same.

Their song is really “yu yin rao liang”.

Yúyīn rào liáng

Enthralling music which echoes

on in people’s minds.

Daniel, listen. What kind of instrument

is this?

It should be the flute.

To be more exact, it’s the Qiang flute.

Qiang flute? I know it’s the same Qiang flute

as in such verses,

“The Qiang flute needn’t sing the

weeping willow,

For the Yumen Pass shut out the

vernal wind below.”

Wow, you did great today!

You both spoke of “yu yin rao liang”

and recited a Tang Dynasty poem

written by Wang Zhihuan.

You deserve praise.

But don’t get conceited.

Daniel, the music we heard just now

came right from here.

But the flute music has been going on

all the time without a pause.

Doe the blowing of the Qiang flue

require no change of breath?

Of course, it does.

But the musicians change their breath

by a unique cheek-bulging technique.

The audience won’t tell.

They would think the flute musician

plays his melodious music all in

one breath.

That’s fantastic!

I’ll take a good listen to it.

Where is Han Jia now?

I really have no idea where

she is gone!

But that doesn’t matter. I’ll look

for her later.

Look at the way I am dressed.

Do I look like a handsome Tibetan

young guy?

Forget about Han Jia. I’m going to

dance the Guozhuang Dance now.

Daniel,Han Jia,

why are you also here?

Han Jia, you are dressed like a Qiang girl.

I nearly failed to recognize you.

Nǐ dǎbàn chéng qiāngzú gūniàng wǒ chà yìdiǎn dōu rèn bù chūlái le.

Dressed as a Qiang girl,I almost didn’t

recognize her.

Oh, yeah. Why did you run away

alone just now?

That’s because I found there was

a lot of fun here.

So I came over and joined in.

Given that people are having fun

singing and dancing here,

I won’t criticize you.

But here I have to correct a

mistake of yours.

It should be pronounced “zai ge zai wu”,

with both “zai” being in the 4th tone.

You mustn’t pronounce the “zai” here

In the third tone.

“zai” has more than one pronunciations.

Here it means “something and

something else”.

It should be pronounced in the 4th tone.

Oh, I see.

When this characte is used to express

something and something else,

For example, singing and dancing, it

is read in the 4th tone. “zai”.

So you should say “zai ge zai wu”.

Ladies and gentlemen,

are you touched by the joyous

atmosphere here?

Then let’s watch today’s Feast for the

Eyes to continue our joy.

Daniel and I are going to join the

Guozhuang dance there.

See you later.

Let’s go.

The old town Songzhou is embraced

by mountains.

Like a weather-worn old man,

the town takes pride in its glory days

and today’s peacefulness and tranquility.

Songzhou does not boast a gorgeous

appearance.

But when you pass through it,

you can’t help pausing

to appreciate its eternal grandeur and charm.

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome back.

As the show has proceeded here,

it’s time to say goodbye to you all.

Daniel, have you come up with

today’s question?

Yes, I have.

Today’s question is as follows.

A classy gift is waiting for you to claim.

Thanks for watching our today’s program.

See you tomorrow at the same time.

Lastly, let’s shout our slogan in unison:
