Learn Chinese with fun.

It’s delightful and easy to remember.

A warm welcome to Happy China!

I am the happy Han Jia.

Today we’re going to have a tour of

the ancient town, Songzhou.

This… This gentleman,

who is leading a horse, excuse me,

please.

Are you talking to me?

Daniel, what farce are you enacting today?

Today I am a hostler.

A hostler?

If you have nothing important to do,

would you like a stroll in this old town?

Zánmen yìqǐ qù guàngguàng gǔchéng, zěnmeyang?

Why don’t we go for a stroll in

the ancient city?

Good. Anyway, I haven’t found anyone

who’s willing to barter tea for my horse.

Okay, let’s go.

Look at Han Jia, how smug she is.

And she is also good at finding places.

Hostler, stop.

What’s up?

I want to take a look at this ancient

city wall.

What’s the good of seeing an old city wall?

Besides, it’s very old.

You just don’t know.

The city wall was built in the Tang Dynasty

more than 1,000 years ago.

But it still stands that solid and firm.

Don’t you think it’s amazing?

I’ve long known about it.

The mortar used then was made

with lime,

tong oil and sticky rice.

That’s why it’s so solid and firm.

You knew this already?

Then, let’s move on.

Let’s go.

The ancient Song Bridge?

We ought to take a look here.

Daniel,

I am a hostler.

Okay, hostler.

Should we stop here for a while?

Alright, please.

The old city Songzhou

was one of China’s key borders towns

linking with Tibet in ancient times.

It was co-inhabited by Tibetans and the

ethnic Qiang, Hui and Han people.

Tā shì yí ge zàng qiāng huí hàn hémù jùjū de dìfang.

It’s a place where Tibetans, Qiang, Hui

and Han live peacefully together.

Look up there.

The picture shows how people

lived and worked at that time.

And the picture over here shows how

tea and horse barter trade was

carried out then?

Exactly. At that time,

cow and horse caravans coming

to Songzhou

were really “luo yi bu jue”.

Does “luo yi bu jue” mean endlessly?

You are right. The set phrase

“luo yi bu jue”

describes an endless flow of traffic.

“luo yi bu jue” is an idiom which

describes an endless flow of traffic.

“luo yi bu jue”.

But it’s a pity there is no more

tea for horse trade today.

It’ impossible for me

to trade my horse for some tea now.

Don’t look crestfallen.

We’ve got to hurry to find a person.

Whom do you want to find?

Hostler, get the horse here.

You’ll know in a moment.

Yes, Ma’am.

Han Jia, are you still looking for someone?

We are already out of the town.

Who are you looking for?

This person resides outside the town.

Here we are.

She was Princess Wencheng of the Tang

Dynasty, who married a king of Tibet.

You are smart. It is said that when Princess

passed the war-torn Songzhou on

her way to Tibet,

she swore

she would do her best to help Tufan live

in peace with the Tang Dynasty.

It can be said she made “han ma

gong lao” for

the harmony between the Han and

Tibetan people.

Tā lìxiàlle hànmǎ gōngláo.

She made an outstanding contribution.

What is “han ma gong lao”?

“han ma gong lao” originally referred to

meritorious deeds on the battlefield.

Now it generally means a great

contribution to a certain cause.

“han ma gong lao”originally meant

valorous deeds on the battlefield.

But it’s now used to mean accomplishments

achieved when participating in a big project.

“han ma gong lao”.

It is a most suitable word to be used

to describe Princess Wencheng.

Ladies and gentlemen,

we are now standing on the city wall above

the eastern city gate, the Jinyang Gate.

Seeing this ancient town from here,

it is truly an instance of standing high

and seeing far and wide.

If you still feel unsatisfied,

it doesn’t matter. Please watch today’s

Feast for the Eyes.

What? You want to know where

Daniel’s gone?

He is tying up his horse.

The ancient town of Songzhou

lies in a quiet river valley in the upper

section of the Minjiang River.

The time-honored rock-solid city wall

embodies the ancient history

and glorious past of the city.

This quiet old town is associated

with the story

about Princess Wencheng’s marriage

with Tibetan king.

Hostler! Hostler Daniel,

we already finished watching the

Feast for the Eyes.

Why haven’t you tied up your horse yes?

Why? Oh …

I suggest you stop trying to bring it

under control.

Set a question for today now instead.

This seems the only choice for me.

Friends, listen carefully.

China Travel – Mu Family Manor

Monday, March 2nd, 2009

The Mu Family Manor is located in Gudu Town, 2.5 kilometers north of Xixia County, Shandong Province.

The Mu Family Manor is a large-scale, well-preserved manor belonging to a landlord named Mu Molin. The ancestors of the Mu family moved to Gudu Town in 1723 during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) and purchased a vast amount of land where they built a manor. Until 1945 the Mu family occupied over 60,000 mu (1 mu = 1/15 of a hectare) of arable land and 12,000 mu of mountain forests. The family had 93 tenants and set up a large number of pawnshops, private banks, groceries, herbal medicine shops and factories in Gudu Town, Xixia County, Yantai and Shanghai.

Covering an area of over 20,000 square meters, the estate contains more than 480 houses and over 30 arched gates. The courtyards all follow the overall arrangement style of a Siheyuan (traditional residential compound with houses around a courtyard) and are typical of the local residential houses in the Jiaodong area.
