  Learn Chinese the fun way.

  It’s much easier to remember.

  Daniel, here in Xi’an,

do you have the feeling that

the whole city is tinged with the

  flavor of the Tang Dynasty?

  Yes, I do.

After all, it was the capital of the

  Tang Dynasty,

  which was the most prosperous

  of all Chinese dynasties.

  I was wondering

what it would feel like to be

  in a Tang-style environment?

The place we are going to visit today

will make your dream come true.

  Really?

I can’t wait. Just hurry and

  take me there.

Okay, we are about to enter Xi’an’s

  Datang Furong Park. Come on.

  This is a gorgeous park!

Yeah, it is a Tang Dynasty culture

  theme park.

  In the park here,

  you can appreciate Tang Dynasty

  architecture to your heart’s content.

  Absolutely, here you can see

  all kinds of architectural styles

  of the Tang Dynasty.

  Yeah. Tang Dynasty structures

  are known for

  their magnificent scales, bright colors

  and pristine and sublime styles.

And Tang Dynasty structures are also

known for their neat and strict layouts.

Táng dài jiànzhù guīhuà de jì zhěngqí yòu yánjǐn.

  Tang Dynasty architecture is characterized

  by its neatness and strictness

  in layouts and style.

  Before the Tang Dynasty,

  Chinese architecture gave prominence

mainly to the original colors of materials.

  But in the Tang Dynasty,

the main colors in use were

  red and white

to achieve the effects of neatness

  and esthetic beauty.

  Besides, colors shouldn’t be used

  indiscriminately.

  The yellow color, reserved for

  the imperial family,

  只有皇宫和寺庙才能使用;

was used only for imperial palaces

  and temples

For residences of princes and court

officials, red or blue were used.

Thus with the different colors of houses,

it was a lot easier to tell the status

of a member of the upper class.

Oh, there were so many rules

  about colors.

  It’s really interesting.

  More interesting things ahead.

  Let’s go on watching.

Han Jia, I have visited many Chinese

  gardens and parks,

but I find this one different from

  any of those.

Then tell me how different they are.

Many of them are small and intricate.

This park is not only beautifully designed,

  but also very spacious.

Zhè zuò yuánlín búdàn shèjì jīngměi, érqiě bùjú kāikuò

Not only is this garden exquisitely

  designed,it’s also very spacious.

That’s the style of Tang Dynasty architecture,

which deserves a poem from me

  to express my feelings.

  What? A poem again?

  Listen.

  Walking around the pool to

  watch the fish …

  Sounds good!

  Hovering dragonflies are skimming

  the water for fun …

The Peach Blossom Pool is a

  thousand feet deep …

  Planting herbs everywhere, they

  find my absence.

You were using a line from each

  of the poems

written by Bai Juyi, Du Fu, Li Bai

  and Wang Wei

to piece them together to form

  poem of your own.

You thought I couldn’t tell it?

How could she tell the secret?

But after all, it isn’t easy for you to

remember these Tang poems so well.

  I let you off.

  There are Tang poems everywhere.

Yeah, because this is the Tang

  Poetry Gallery.

The poems we saw just now were all

written by great poets of the Tang Dynasty.

The lines you recited were all from

  their poems.

  Speaking of Tang poems,

I must say I like them very much.

Now, let me recite one for you.

  Go ahead.

To my question, the boy under

  a pine tree said:

  ”My teacher is collecting herbs

  Deep in the mountains somewhere

  in the clouds.”

Hey, I didn’t expect Daniel could

  recite Tang poems.

  That’s for sure.

  No matter whether I understand

or not, I can recite them.

What do you mean “understand or not”?

  That’s rote learning.

  Rote learning isn’t bad.

Anyway, I can recite them “gun gua

  lan shu” (recite fluently).

  Yeah, “gun gua lan shu”

means to read or recite texts

  very fluently.

  It’s a frequently used colloquialism.

”gun gua lan shu” describes being

able to read or recite very fluently.

For example, I can recite Tang

  poems very fluently.

Wǒ bǎ tángshī bèi dé gǔnguā-lànshú.

I can recite many Tang poems by heart.

  Audience friends,

  in the Datang Furongyuan Park,

there is also a Tang-style market.

In addition to a variety of handicrafts,

the market also sells snacks Daniel

  has never tasted before.

  The market is extremely busy.

Let’s take a stroll through the market.

  Audience friends, come with us

  for the stroll.

China Travel – Guangyun Burmese Temple

Saturday, February 7th, 2009

The Guangyun Burmese Temple is located to the north of Mengdong Street in Cangyuan County of the Lincang area, Yunnan Province.

The Guangyun Burmese Temple is a construction belonging to Hinayana. It was built in the early years of Emperor Daoguang’s reign in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) and covers an area of 2,200 square meters. The present main hall is built on a base 0.5 to 1.5 meters high. The temple is 14.8 meters wide and 24.4 meters long. The pavilion has a double-eaved gable and hip roof and brackets beneath the eaves carved with floating clouds. The main hall, built on a wooden structure, has three-layers of eaves and a gable and hip roof. The doors and windows are engraved with patterns and the girders and columns are decorated with golden water patterns. The exquisite carving techniques reflect the traditional crafts of the Dai ethnic minority. Six golden columns stand in a row in the hall and two huge wood-carved dragons hang from the front girder giving the hall a splendid hue. Both the inner and outer walls are covered in frescos, of which 10 are well preserved, measuring 48 square meters in total. Buddhist stories and local customs are the inspired themes of the frescos, which possess a style and drawing technique similar to that of the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing Dynasties.

The Guangyun Burmese Temple is believed to have been constructed in the eighth year (1828) of the Daoguang reign in the Qing Dynasty. The construction style has been greatly influenced by architecture of the Hans, but retains the basic form of the Hinayana Temple, as well, providing solid evidence of the cultural exchange between the Han and Dai people.
