Learn Chinese Podcast – Happy China 411

Friday, February 6th, 2009

Learning Chinese the fun way is

  easier to remember.

  Welcome to Happy China.

I am the happy Han Jia.

And I am the happy Daniel.

  Ladies and gentlemen,

you must be familiar with this

  structure behind me.

  This is Xi’an’s landmark, the

  Dayan Pagoda.

It is also our destination for today.

  Let’s get moving.

  Let’s go.

  About the Dayan Pagoda …

Halt, halt. Let me say it.

  Yeah, please go ahead.

  Listen to me.

The Dayan Pagoda was built in the

  Tang Dynasty.

It is 64.5 meters in height, with

  seven stories.

Well, so much for my explanation.

  Thank you.

  What? That’s all?

Yes, that’s all I know about it.

Now you have to take over.

I thought you knew a lot about it.

The Dayan Pagoda is also called

  Daci’en Pagoda.

It was designed by Master Monk Xuanzang

  of the Tang Dynasty.

  Master Monk Xuanzang made important

  contributions to Chinese culture.

Xuánzàng dàshī duì zhōngguó wénhuà zuòchūle zhòngdà gòngxiàn.

  The Monk Xuanzang made great

  contributions to Chinese culture.

  Oh, Master Monk Xuanzang!

  The name sounds so familiar.

  Who was he?

Tang Seng (Tang Monk). Is it familiar

  to you?

I know. In the novel, Journey to the West,

he is called Tang Sanzang, the kind-hearted

monk, who knows how to murmur incantations.

I didn’t know he designed the pagoda.

  The character, Tang Seng,

is different from the real-life monk Xuanzang.

  Xuanzang was a knowledgeable

  and strong-willed man.

I know this. You see, on the journey,

he experienced 81 kinds of tribulations

  before successfully obtained the real

  Buddhist sutra from India.

  He was really great!

And he built this pagoda after his return.

  Daniel, you mustn’t take novels

  as real history.

It seems necessary for me to tell you

the story about Xuanzang and the

  Dayan Pagoda.

  Let’s go.
