Xi’an Forest of Stone Steles Museum.
大牛：好多石碑呀。
So many stone steles.
韩佳：这是唐代撰写的十二部经书。
These are 12 classics all engraved
in the Tang Dynasty.
这些经书是中国古代知识分子必读的。
These classics were books all ancient Chinese
intellectuals would read with no exception.
Zhèxiē jīng shū shì zhōngguó gǔdài zhīshi fèn zì bì dú de.
这些 经书 是 中国 古代 知识分子 必 读 的。
These are the classics,which ancient
Chinese intellectuals considered to be
compulsory reading material.
在唐朝的时候，
During the Tang Dynasty,
印刷术还不是那么发达。
printing wasn’t quite advanced yet.
人们读书都是靠手抄写。
The books people read were all
copied by hand.
一抄多了难免会出现错误。
When more books are copied, it is
unavoidable to make mistakes.
为了有一个标准的版本，
To have a standard version
of these classics,
这部石刻经书就诞生了。
classics carved in stone were thus born.

Yes, authentic classics carved in stone
大家都能来看，
could be not only read by all people,
而且还能永久保存。
but also preserved forever.

In ancient China, Daqin referred

景教是基督教的一个流派。

这块石碑上面记载的是唐代时

It’s a poem praising the fine
qualities of bamboo.

韩佳：哎。它把文字和绘画结合在一起，
Yeah. Combining words with a picture,
所以就叫藏诗画。
it is called the poem-hiding picture.

再加上后人悉心的
Thanks to the “xi xin” (first tone) protection
and additional collections
搜集和保护，
by people of later generations,
才有了这里3000多方碑石。
it became possible for over 3,000
steles all to be gathered here.
