Beijing Olympic – HK police: Safety assured for equestrian events

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009

Hong Kong Police have experience, confidence, sufficient resources and expertise to tackle any situation which may arise during the Olympic Equestrian Events to be held in Hong Kong, Senior Assistant Commissioner of Hong Kong Police Henrique Koo said here Saturday.

Speaking on a radio talk show Saturday morning, Koo said, the police and the Equestrian Company have formulated contingency measures including staff deployment plans to ensure safety at the Olympic Equestrian Events.

Koo noted the city’s security threat is moderate, and there is no evidence suggesting Hong Kong will be a terrorist target during the games.

Hong Kong Police will maintain close liaison with the Chinese mainland and overseas law-enforcement agencies, he said, adding security measures will be enhanced when necessary.

As public alertness is essential, Koo also urged people to inform the police of any suspicious activity, stay calm in case of unexpected incidents and follow the police’s instructions.

It’s easy and fun to learn Chinese.

  Daniel, in Xi’an this time,

we’ve seen the terra cotta warriors.

Do you know for whom were they made?

  For Qin Shihuang.

He was the country’s first emperor who

united China over 2,200 years ago.

Then do you know where he was buried

  after his death?

I guess it should be around here?

  Stop looking for it.

Today I’ll take you to see the Qin

  Shihuang Mausoleum.

And I guarantee you’ll be surprised.

  Me, surprised again?

  Yes. Come on.

  We’ve walked a long way,

but where on earth is Qin Shihuang

  Mausoleum?

Nǐ shuō de qínshǐhuánglíng dàodǐ zài nǎr a?

Where is the Qin Shihuang Mausoleum

  you mentioned?

  It’s right here underfoot.

  Is this mound the mausoleum?

  Not just that.

The whole area within a radius of 50

kilometers lies on top of the mausoleum.

  It can’t be this large!

  Why not?

Construction of the tomb started as

soon as Qin Shihuang took the throne.

  It lasted 38 years,

eight years more than it took to build

  Khufu’s Pyramid of Egypt.

How many people it took for this project?

At one point, the project used

  800,000 workers,

eight times as many as the workers used

for the construction of Khufu’s Pyramid.

It was indeed a rare and “ju da” project.

  You are right.

But, here it would be more appropriate

  to use “pang da” (colossal).

”pang da” means too big, or

  unreasonably large.

”pang da”, second tone, fourth tone,

  means gigantic, colossal,

  however it’s a derogatory term.

  ”pang da”.

Let’s get on the top of the hill to

  take a look.

  Let’s go.

Daniel, behind us is the Lishan Mountain.

  There scenery is pretty good.

It is a nice site chosen for the mausoleum.

The site for the tomb was chosen

  to be here

not just because of the nice scenery here.

  Ancient people believed the site

  for the tomb

would bless the dynasty, ensuring that it

  would last generations after generations.

  Oh, I see.

But I could hardly see anything substantial

  related with the mausoleum.

  After more than 2,000 years,

  the ground structures of the

  mausoleum have disappeared.

  Based on remnants, contemporary artists

reproduced on canvas some of the

  grandeur of the mausoleum.

Then, please tell us what the mausoleum

  looked like originally.

The mausoleum was built in imitation

of the Qin Dynasty’s capital, Xianyang.

It was basically like the Chinese character

”hui” (double squares with one inside the other).

The tomb was surrounded with two walls.

Does “cheng yuan” mean a city wall?

  Yes, “yuan” means a wall.

  ”yuan”, second tone, means wall.

  ”yuan”.

  Despite its large size,

I find the principal part of this mausoleum

  remains the hill-like earthen mound.

  Exactly.

  The Qin Shihuang Mausoleum embodies

the highest achievement of Qin culture.

The Qin Shihuang Mausoleum embodies the

greatest cultural achievements of the Qin dynasty.

  Qin Shihuang lived an extravagant

  life when he was alive.

So after his death, this huge mound was

built to symbolize his dignity and authority.

  Yes, indeed.

  The mound behind us looks

  like a pyramid.

The pyramids of ancient Egypt are the

largest imperial tombs above the ground.

And China’s Qin Shihuang Mausoleum is

  the largest imperial tomb underground.

This huge mound has another function,

that is to protect the underground palace.

Wow, there is an underground palace?

Come on, let’s go and take a look.

Oh, no. You can’t see it.

  The current technologies are still

  incapable of excavating it.

  So the real underground palace

is still unavailable for us to see.

Oh, we can’t see it now.

  What a pity!

  It isn’t a pity.

Isn’t it good to have all the cultural relics

  safely preserved underground?

If you really want to know what the

  underground palace looks like,

I can tell you a bit. Are there any

  records in historical books?

  Yes, there are.

  According to historical records,

There are rivers and oceans in the

form of mercury in the palace.

The ceiling of the palace is decorated

  with an astronomical chart.

On the floor, there should be a simulated

  map of a unified China.

There is also an altar lamp

  burning whale oil.

The lamp is supposed to burn eternally

to keep the entire palace bright.

  What, rivers of mercury?

  It sounds so mysterious.

Yes, indeed. There are still many mysteries

about Qin Shihuang waiting to be uncovered.

Zhèli hái yǒu hěn duō mìmi děngdài rénmen qù jiēkāi ne.

There are still many mysteries waiting

  to be uncovered here.

There are indeed lots of mysteries about him.

It’s not bad to leave room for imagination.

I do wish I could see it after the Qin

  Shihuang Mausoleum is opened.

  No problem. It’s possible.

  Alright, next,

  please enter our today’s Feast

  for the Eyes.

  Please.

  The Qinshihuang Mausoleum was

  built over 2,200 years ago.

Occupying a large area and built

  on a magnificent scale,

the mausoleum is the largest underground

  imperial tomb in the world.

Displaying an emperor’s majesty and power.

the tomb was built also for posterity

to pay homage to their ancestors.

  Despite the vicissitudes of times,

  the mausoleum exudes an imperial

  ruler’s dignified status.

Well, is the Qin Shihuang Mausoleum

  very big?

But before we conclude our program,

we’d have a question for you again.

  Today’s question is:

  What does “yuan” mean?

  Ní ba

  A.泥 巴 Mud

  qiáng

  B.墙 Wall

  Wài wéi

  C.外 围 Periphery

Beautiful gifts are waiting for you.
