Learn Chinese the fun way.
It’s much easier to remember.
Welcome to Happy China.
I am the happy Jan Jia.
And I the animal-loving Daniel.
Hey, when have you started
to love animals?
Actually, I am always a man with
a loving heart.
Haven’t you noticed how excited
I have been
since we came to Zhalong?
Yeah, I have notice that.
These past few days, you keep watching
the red-rested cranes every day.
Of course, visiting Zhalong,
I should watch the red-crested cranes.
Hey, Daniel, since you are so keen
about red-crested cranes,
then how much do you know
about the bird?
Actually I know very little about
red-crested cranes.
Then listen carefully to my explanation.
Oh, she’s going to give me a
lecture again.
I’d rather go listen to the songs
of cranes.
Yes.
The calls of red-crested cranes
are very loud.
And their calls have meanings.
Look how much she loves to show off.
Hey, what did you say?
I said how knowledgeable you are.
Did you say that?
Yes.
Oh, forget it.
Do you know what functions the
calls of red-crested cranes have?
Like humans,
they would surely sing when
they are happy.
If they sing to me, they mean I
am welcome.
You are wrong.
Red-crested cranes call to attract
their mates.
Dāndǐnghè yòng míng jiào shēng lái qiú ǒu
Red-crowned cranes use their calls
to court potential mates.
They also use their calls to mean
to declare
that certain territories are theirs.
What would happen if an intruder
enters a crane’s territory?
It would peck the challenger real hard.
Eh, Daniel,
you thought they were welcoming you?
Han Jia, we’d better keep a distance
from them.
Han Jia, there are so many cranes here.
And they all look like one another.
How do you distinguish the females
from the males?
It’s difficult to do so by their appearances.
But we can tell the differences
from their calls
the the postures when they call.
Female birds must sing more melodiously.
Just on the contrary.
The calls of male cranes are sonorous
and more pleasant to hear.
Oh, I see.
Another salient feature of the birds is that
once a female and a male have
tied the knot,
they would remain forever loyal
to each other
and never part.
”zhong zhen bu yu” is an expression which
means to be loyal to one another until death.
”zhong zhen bu yu”.
It seems red-crested cranes are
faithful lovers.
We’d like to wish all the cranes here
a happy married life forever.
Han Jia, what kind of birds are they?
They’re two-month-old red-crested cranes.
These chicks were all born in Zhalong.
Oh, this is how they look when they
are young.
These downy and cute chicks!
Han Jia, when will the feathers
on top of their heads turn red?
It’s their comb, not feathers, that turns red
Normally it takes two to three years
for a young crane’s comb to become
red, indicating the crane has matured.
What happens after they have matured?
After they have matured, they’ll begin
to mate and breed their young.
Every spring,
red-crested cranes will fly to Zhalong
to breed their young.
Měi nián de chūntiān ,dāndǐnghè dōu huì dào zhālóng lái fǎnyǎn hòudài.
Every spring,red-crowned cranes fly to
Zhalong to lay eggs and raise their young.
what is this bird?
It’s called the demoiselle crane,
the smallest crane species.
Look at the feathers behind its eyes.
Do they look like ribbons?
Yes, indeed.
there is another crane species.
That’s the white crane. And still
another kind.
This is called gray-naped crane.
I didn’t expect many kinds of cranes here.
Yeah, there are a total 15 kinds
of cranes in the world.
And here we can find six of them.
So Zhalong is China’s biggest nature
reserve for cranes.
Yes, as cranes’ habitat,
Zhalong’s natural conditions
can be said
”de tian du hou” (uniquely endowed
by nature).
Zuòwéi niǎo de qīxīdì, zhālóng de tiáojiàn dé tiān dú hòu.
As a bird habitat, Zhalong is endowed
with perfect natural conditions.
”de tian du hou”, means to be richly
endowed by nature.
”de tian du hou”.
Han Jia, Today I had an opportunity
to glut my eyes.
You have glutted your eyes.
But I still want to see more.
Then, together with our audience,
let’s move into today’s Feast
for the Eyes.

nature reserve for aquatic birds.
Here there are vast swamps with lush
aquatic weeds.
Six of the world’s 15 crane species live here.
Sporting on the surface of the swamps.
they are singing in unison or hovering
high above surface of the water.
The visitor will enjoy a full view
of the wetland.
