Track-laying in the Beijing area for the Beijing-Tianjin Intercity Fast Railway completed five days ahead of schedule, as the railway reached Beijing South Railway Station on December 10.
The Beijing-Tianjin Intercity Fast Railway is the first high-standard and high-speed special railway line for passenger transportation in China. Train speeds may be as high as 350 kilometers per hour. The rail project began on July 4, 2005, and the 115-km railway connecting the two big cities is also a key project associated with the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
According to Zhong Yu, the director of the Beijing-Tianjin Intercity Fast Railway Project Department of the China Civil Railway Engineering Group, the intercity Fast Railway adopts advanced railway technology and is the first domestic railway project using defense technology. According to the plan, the track-laying would be complete by December 20, making way for a test run in the first quarter of next year.
The railway system is to make its official launch in 2008 just before the Beijing Olympic Games, when the commute between Beijing and Tianjin would be only a half-hour journey. Moreover, there is to be a train leaving from both cities every five minutes.
