  Learn Chinese the fun way.

  It’s easy to remember.

Welcome to this edition of Happy

  China – Learning

Chinese, hosted by Han Jia and Daniel.

There are many lamaseries in Hohhot.

The same is true for Baotou.

So the first stop for our trip today will

be the Wudang Lamasery behind us.

Han Jia, we are surely in Inner Mongolia,

but I feel as if we were in Tibet.

That’s the very feature of the

  Wudang Lamasery.

The whole temple was built in the

  ibetan style.

  Seeing a Tibetan monastery in

  Inner Mongolia

  is really interesting.

Han Jia, I’ve got a question to ask you.

  Yes, what question?

Are there any relations between the Wudang

  Lamasery and the Wudang Mountain?

  No, not a bit.

The word Wudang as in Wudang Lamasery

is a transliteration from the Mongolian word,

  meaning a willow tree.

  Oh, I see.

  ”ting zhe” (Hearing) your explanation,

  now I am clear.

Hey, you used a wrong auxiliary verb

  in your sentence.

  ”zhe” means the continuation of

  an action or a state.

But “liao” or “le” means the completion

  of an action.

  So you should have said:

”ting le” (having heard) your explanation,

  now I am clear.

Tīngle nǐ de jiǎngjiě wǒ cái míngbai.

  After having heard your explanation

  I understand.

  Han Jia,

I heard the Wudang Lamasery is Inner

  Mongolia’s biggest Tibetan Buddhist monastery.

  Exactly. The lamasery consists of

  2,500 rooms

  and six palatial halls.

  Six palatial halls?

  What are they used for?

Each of the six halls has a different function.

The Dongkuoerdu Hall here, for instance,

is used for the teaching of astronomy,

  calendar and math.

  The Queyila Hall over there

is a special place for the study of

  Buddhist philosophies.

And the Ahui Hall is used for the teaching

of Mongolian medicine and Tibetan medicine.

Oh, my goodness, it almost equals a

  comprehensive university.

  You are perfectly right.

It can be regarded as an institution of higher

  learning for training religious professionals.

In a moment, we’ll see the Meidai Monastery.

  Its architectural style is completely

  different from the style here.

  Let’s go.

Daniel, look, that’s the Meidai Monastery.

Oh, yes. It is indeed different from the

  Wudang Lamasery in style.

You see there a gate tower, a city wall

and even a watcher tower at the corner.

But it looks a bit like the Forbidden City.

  That’s the point.

It was originally a town, not a monastery.

Zhèli qǐchū bú shì miào, ér shì chéng.

Originally, it wasn’t a temple, but a town.

After the chief Altan Khan unified the

  various factions of Mongolia,

he met Tibetan Buddhism on his

  westward expedition.

  Hence, he brought Buddhism into

  the Mongolia region.

He changed the town Meidai into

  a monastery,

making it a ruling center having the

functions of both a town and a monastery.

That means the Meidai Monastery was the

  earliest lamasery

  built on the Mongolian Grassland?

  Yes, you are right.

  I’ll take a close look.

  Let’s get in.

The Meidai Monastery is also known

  as a museum of frescoes.

  Lots of artwork inside!

  With so many frescoes here,

it does deserve to be called a museum

  of frescoes.

  Right, exactly.

A total of 1,650 square meters of frescoes from

the Ming Dynasty are kept at the monastery.

And they were all painted with natural

  mineral pigments.

So far, none of them has been repaired.

This is my first time to see

the image of Wang Zhaojun in ethnic

  minority costume.

Hey, what are you talking about?

This is the statue of Sanniangzi.

  Sanniangzi?

  Yes.

She was the third wife of Altan Khan

  and also a heroic woman.

After the death of Altan Khan,

she took control of the political and military

  power for 40 years.

Oh, I didn’t expect that in addition to

  Genghis Khan and Kublai Khan

  in the history of Mongolia,

there was also such a great heroine.

  Yes.

So we may say Sanniangzi has left

  her name in history.

Tā zhēn kěyǐ shuō shì míng liú qīngshǐ a.

She really has left her name

  in the history book.

  Han Jia, wait a minute,

Did you mean she left her name in the

  history of the Qing Dynasty?

Oh, I didn’t say the “qing” as in

  the Qing Dynasty.

It is the “qing” as in ‘qing cao” (green grass).

  ”qing shi” means history books.

Oh, “qing shi”, first tone, third tone,

is a general term which refers to

  history books.

  ”Qing shi”.

This is indeed an example of women

  being as capable as men.

  Daniel, it’s getting late.

  It’s time to leave.

  Wait a moment.

  Time passes so quickly.

But there is an important thing

  I haven’t told our viewers.

  What’s that?

First look at the Feast for the Eyes.

The Wudang Lamasery is known for its long

  history and majestic architectural style.

With its graceful statues and colorful murals

the lamasery is a treasure trove

of Buddhist culture on the grassland.

The Meidai Monastery is a town-style

  Buddhist shrine.

  The beautiful and colorful frescoes

  reflect a splendid nomadic civilization.

What a feeling of vicissitudes of history?

  You are being sentimental.

Did you say you had an important thing

  to tell us? What’s that?

Yes, I am going to tell our audience

  about today’s question.

Oh, I thought it was something special.

  It is something special.

If your answer is correct, you’ll get a gift.

That’s true. So you’d better tell us now.

  Shǐ shū

Trev, Paul and Wei discuss how to get from New Orleans to Orlando
Trev: I think we should fly. It’s the fastest option.
Wei: But if we fly, we’ll miss out on the landscape.
Trev: Airplanes are out, then. We’ve already rented a car. How about hitchhiking?
Wei: That sounds dangerous. I’ll pass.
Trev: The only other options are the train or a bus.
Wei: I’d like to see what an American bus is like.
Trev: They’re not as nice as trains.
Wei: But Greyhound is famous. Let’s take it.
Trev: OK. Let’s go find a computer to buy e-tickets.
