Chinese Conversation – lesson 251

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008

Ajie: The war in Iraq is probably going to get worse.
Beth: And more people will probably want to be terrorists.
Ajie: The U.S. and British armies should prosecute any soldiers and officers involved with these crimes.
Beth: I think they should make some government officials resign.
Ajie: Either that or withdraw from Iraq altogether.
Beth: It’s too late to do that now. They’ve already invaded. Now they have to get their jobs done before they can leave.
Ajie: They should have never invaded in the first place.
Beth: Try telling that to Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld. They didn’t even listen when millions of people protested.

  Enjoy learning Chinese and

  it is carefree and easy.

  Hello, everyone!

  This is Happy China.

  I am happy Daniel.

  I am happy Han Jia.

Being fed up with the urban prosperity,

let’s enjoy the tranquil life today.

  Right, here it is.

Po Lin Monastery on the Outlaying Island.

  When temples are mentioned,

we have been to many of them.

But, beside the Po Lin Monastery…

In a moment, the answer will

  be disclosed.

Han Jia, if you tell the audience

  so early,

they will lose the pleasant surprise

  when they find it.

Do you believe they don’t know?

Who will ignore such a large joss?

  Why is it so high?

It is larger than you can imagine,

  isn’t it?

  Dear audience,

this joss is the famous Big Buddha

  in Hong Kong.

It is said, in the world of today, it is the

  largest open-air bronze sitting Buddha.

This joss is cast with bronze,

26 m high, and 220 ton in weight.

We have see the stone sitting Buddha

  in Leshan Mountain before,

  today I will thoroughly observe

  this big bronze Buddha.

  There are a three-floor altar and 268

  steps before me.

If I want to observe the joss closely,

I must take the hardship first.

  No problem.

You’ll have to do some hard work if

you want to get a close-up view of

  the Big Buddha.

So large a joss it is!

Look, I am even shorter than

  the lotus pedal.

Why are there names in the pedal?

This joss was built with donations

  from many people,

so their names are kept on the petal.

So many of them! Han Jia, look

  at the joss here.

  Is it also bronze-cast?

  Indeed.

But it isn’t a joss, but called 6

  Goddesses presenting offerings.

  What does it mean?

  It means 6 Goddesses

  are worshipping the joss,

some with fruit plates on hands,

  and some holding musical instruments

  or flower bundles.

  6 Goddesses consecrate six kinds

  of offerings to the joss.

I did not imagine, around the

  Big Buddha,

  there are such exquisite sculptures.

Méi xiǎngdào dà fuó de zhōuwéi yě yǒu zhème jīngzhì de diōokè.

I didn’t expect there to be such exquisite

  carvings around the Big Buddha.

I did not imagine, around the

  Big Buddha,

  there are such exquisite sculptures.

  There are even more underneath

  the joss.

The Big Buddha has a three-floor

  basement,

where locates the Merit Hall, Amitabha

  Hall, and Memorial Hall respectively.

Three floors in total. So we are

  now in the …

  First floor, the Merit Hall.

  Look, Kshitigarbha Bodhisattva is

  worshipped here.

  Kshitigarbha Bodhisattva?

  I never heard of it.

  Kshitigarbha Bodhisattva is…

  Daniel, have you found that

this joss is carved from precious Nanmu.

From Nanmu, it looks like stone.

It was carved from Nanmu over

So exquisite, it is indeed a rare one.

Han Jia, this should be the Memorial

  Hall you mentioned.

Right, there is an even more precious

  treasure here.

  What is it? Buddha Sarira,

which was brought from Sri Lanka by the

master of this temple in person.

It is a rare treasure indeed. Sure.

So far, there are only two most precious

  Sariras in the world,

  one in Sri Lanka,

the other is this one before us.

So it is Wu Du You Ou.

Wu Du You Ou means, though

  rarely seen,

but there are more than one,

there is another one to match it.

Wu Du You Ou is a Chinese expression

which means rare but not unique.

  Wu Du You Ou.

  Wú dú yǒu ǒu

  Rare but not unique

  But this idiom usually bears

  a derogatory sense,

and is not quite proper to use this way.

  Sorry, I got it.

In our trip to the Po Lin Monastery today

  so many precious treasures have

  broadened our vision,

and the fragrant tea has satisfied

  our thirst.

We feel fairly refreshed, and cool.

  So, dear audience,

  Next comes the Enjoyable Scenery,

Why not enjoy the tranquil life,

before devoting into the busy work?

  Let’s have a break first.

  Don’t forget our motto.

  Learn to speak Chinese and

  make friends everywhere.

Po Lin Monastery is located on the

  Outlying Islands.

It boasts the largest outdoor bronze

  Buddha in the world.

There is a rich collection of treasures.

The statue is exquisite with soft lines.

The big Buddha is resolute and serene,
