Chinese Conversation – lesson 223

Wednesday, October 8th, 2008

At Caolin Gudao
Kathy: This used to be one of the main roads for local people.
Morley: That must have been in the days before cars.
Kathy: Yeah. People walked, rode horses, and led cows on this road.
Morley: I can almost smell the manure.
Kathy:[Sees a snake] Oh! Watch out! That snake is poisonous.
Morley:[Gets closer] You’ve right. It’s an umbrella snake. I need to take a picture.
Kathy: Kill it! Kill it! Here’s a rock.
Morley: No way. Snakes are good. They kill rodents.

    不知您听没听说过这样一句话:

Did you ever hear the saying:

    ”西珠不如东珠,

”Guangxi pearls are not as good

    as Guangdong pearls and

    东珠不如南珠”?

Guangdong pearls are not as good

    as southern pearls.”?

    这北海啊,

    And Beihai,

    就是著名的”南珠”的主产地,

a major producing area of the famous

    southern pearls,

    素有”珠城”之称。

is known as the City of Pearls.

    这里盛产的珍珠颗大圆润。

    Pearls produced here are big

    and round.

    色泽艳丽,名扬中外。

    The lustrous pearls are renowned

    both in China and abroad.

    韩佳: 快乐学汉语,万里海疆行!

Learning Chinese the fun way on the

    Happy Journey along the Coast!

    大家好,新的一天又跟您见面了。

Hello, good to see you again

    in this new day.

    我是快乐的韩佳。

    I’m Merry Han Jia.

    王渊源:我是快乐的渊源。

    And I’m Happy Yuanyuan.

    韩佳呀,这珍珠可是好东西呀。

    Han Jia, pearls are surely

    nice things.

    不光能制成首饰,

    Not only make ornaments,

    还具有很高的药用价值和美容价值。

but they have very high medicinal

    and skincare values.

    韩佳: 哎,说得没错儿。

    Yes, you said correctly.

    王渊源:珍珠特别好。你一定喜欢。

    Pearls are nice things.

    You must like them.

    韩佳: 珍珠是挺好的呀。

Yes, pearls are very nice indeed.

王渊源:哎呀,韩佳,

    Oh, Han Jia,

    咱们都来北海三天了。

    we’ve been in Beihai for

    three days already.

    怎么还不去看看北海的珍珠啊?

Why don’t we go and see

    some Beihai pearls?

    你不是说了嘛,

    Didn’t you say

    北海可有”珠城”之称啊?

Beihai is known as the City

    of Pearls?

    盛产珍珠啊。

    It abounds in pearls.

    韩佳: 瞧把你急的。

    Look, how anxious you are.

    我先来看看今天的日程安排。

Let me take a look at today’s

    schedule first.

    今天的计划就是去看珍珠。

Our plan for today is to go to

    see pearls.

    那咱们的第一站就去看看

As our first stop, let’s see

    北海的第一大珍珠吧。

    Beihai’s biggest pearl.

    王渊源:好啊,好啊。

    Okay, good.

    终于可以一饱眼福了。

I can finally have a feast for

    my eyes.

韩佳,你说的第一大珍珠在哪儿呢?

Han Jia, where is the biggest pearl

    you said?

    韩佳: 不就在那儿嘛?

    Isn’t it right over there?

    那么大,你还看不见啊?

It’s that big. Didn’t you see it?

    王渊源:啊,雕塑啊?

    Oh, a sculpture?

    让你带我看珍珠。

I asked you to show me pearls.

    你可倒好,带我来看雕塑!

    But you brought me here

    to see a sculpture!

    韩佳: 别着急,别着急。

    Don’t worry. Be patient.

    我先跟大伙儿说说

    First, let me explain to

    our audience

    ”…倒好”的用法。

    the usage of “…dao hao”.

    ”…倒好”呢是句常用的口头语。

”…Dao hao” is a frequently used

    colloquialism.

    该做什么却没做什么,

It is used to express dissatisfaction

    该是什么样子却不是什么样子。

    with someone for something

    poorly done.

    就可以用”他倒好”、”你倒好”

The phrases “ta dao hao”, “ni dao hao”

    来表示一定程度的埋怨。

imply a certain degree of complaint.

    王渊源:”…倒好”常用来表示

So saying that someone is “…dao hao”

    can be used to express

    一定程度的埋怨。

    dissatisfaction with someone.

    用英文不能直译。

    There’s no direct translation

    in English.

韩佳: 比如说,大家都为他着急。

    For example, everyone is worried

    about him.

    他可倒好,自己一点儿都不急。

But he is not at all worried himself.

    再比如渊源你刚才说的那句。

    Another example just as

    Yuanyuan said.

    让你带我看珍珠。

    You’re really something. I asked

you to take me to see pearls

    你可倒好,带我看雕塑啊!

    and you brought me to

    see a sculpture!

Ràng nǐ dài wǒ kàn zhēnzhū nǐ kě dào hǎo dài wǒ lái kàn diāosù

    让 你 带 我 看 珍珠。 你 可 倒 好,带我 来 看 雕塑。

You’re really something. I asked you to take me to see pearls and you brought me to see a sculpture.

    这个雕塑呢叫做”南珠魂”。

This sculpture is called the Soul

    of Southern Pearls.

    表现的就是北海的特产珍珠啊。

It features a pearl, the special

    product of Beihai.

    我带你来这儿,

    I brought you here

    是想事先让你感受一下,

because I wanted you to get

    a feel in advance

    北海浓郁的珍珠文化氛围。

    for the strong atmosphere of

    Beihai’s pearl culture.

    王渊源:哦,谢谢,谢谢。

    Oh, thank you.

    可我还是想去看看实实在在的珍珠啊。

But I want to see the real pearls.

    韩佳: 嗬,你可真是时时刻刻都不忘啊。

    Oh, you’ve never forgotten that

    even for a single moment.

王渊源:哇,这么多珍珠啊!

    Wow, there are so many

    pearls here!

    您瞧瞧,想让韩佳带我看珍珠容易吗?

Look, was it easy for Han Jia to

    show me pearls?

    韩佳: 嗯?渊源,你说什么呢?

    What? Yuanyuan, what did

    you say?

    王渊源:没什么。

    Nothing.

    我是说想出一个

I just said it wasn’t easy

    跟珍珠有关的成语容易嘛。

    to say an idiom associated

    with pearls.

    韩佳: 哎,你别说。

Eh, make no mistake about it.

    带”珠”字的成语还挺多的呢,

There are a lot of idioms containing

    the word “zhu” (pearl),

    比如…

    for example …

    王渊源:比如,好像有个成语叫什么

For example, there is the idiom

    鱼啊什么珠。

    that sounds something

    like “yu … zhu”.

    韩佳: 鱼目混珠。

    ”Yu mu hun zhu”.

    王渊源:对啊,就是”鱼目混珠”啊。

    Yes, “yu mu hun zhu”.

    它的字面意思是把鱼眼掺杂在珍珠里面?

It literally means to pass fish eyes

    off as pearls, right?

    韩佳: 嗯。那”鱼目混珠”这个成语呢

Right. The idiom “yu mu hun zhu”

    我们现在常常用它来比喻,

    is often used metaphorically

    to mean

    用假的东西冒充真的东西。

to pass a sham off as

    something real.

    王渊源:用英文来解释就是”以假乱真”。

In English we might say to pass

a sham off as something real.

zuò shēngyi yào shízài bù néng yúmù hǔnzhū

    做 生意 要 实在, 不 能 鱼目 混珠。

When doing business one should be honest and

not pass a sham off as something real.

工作人员:先生、小姐,请您放心,

    Sir and miss, we guarantee

    you that

    我们这里的珠子都是真的。

all the pearls here are real.

    韩佳: 哦,对不起,对不起。

    Oh, sorry.

    我们刚才是在给大家讲

Just now we were talking about

    ”鱼目混珠”这个成语。

the idiom “yu mu hun zhu”.

    您是这里的工作人员吧?

    Are you an employee here?

    工作人员:对对。

    Yes.

    韩佳: 那正好给我们介绍一下

You might just as well tell us

    怎么辨别珍珠的好坏吧。

    the way how to distinguish

    fine pearls?

    工作人员:行啊,行啊。

    Sure, no problem.

    旁白: 听工作人员介绍,

We heard from this employee that

    珍珠可以从形状、光泽、颜色、

    pearls are judged in five

    aspects, shape,

    瑕疵、大小五个方面来鉴别。

    luster, color, flaws and size.

    南珠的特点呢就是色泽艳丽。

    Southern pearls are known

    for their bright luster.

    听完了介绍,

    After her explanation,

    工作人员建议我们到加工区

    the employee suggested we should

    go to the processing area

    自己动手穿珍珠项链。

    and string a few pearl

    necklaces ourselves.

    这个有意思。

    That sounds interesting.

    王渊源:韩佳,我们现在干的活儿

Han Jia, the job we’re doing here

    让我想起了一个成语。

    reminds me of an idiom.

    韩佳: 哦,说来听听。

    Oh, say it to us.

    王渊源:”珠联璧合”呀。

    ”Zhu lian bi he”.

    韩佳: 不错。

    Right.

    那观众朋友们,

    Audience friends,

    您是不是也想到这个成语了呢?

Did you also think of this idiom?

    ”珠联璧合”就是指把珍珠穿在一起,

”Zhu lian bi he” literally means

    to put

    把美玉合到一块儿。

    a string of pearls together

    with a piece of jade.

    比喻美好的人或者是事物凑在一起。

It is used metaphorically to mean

    perfect pair or happy combination.

    王渊源:”珠联璧合”

    So “zhu lian bi he”

    比喻美好的人或者是事物凑在一起。

is used to refer to a perfect

    pair or happy combination.

    好像我们也常常说,

It seems we often use this idiom

    一对儿新人珠联璧合,是吧?

to refer to a newly married

    couple, right?

    韩佳: 嗯。只可惜我们现在呢

Yes. The only pity is that

    只有珠联,没有璧合呀。

    we have only pearls here,

    no jade.

    王渊源:哎呀,韩佳,

    Oh, Han Jia,

    有这些漂亮的珍珠已经很不错呀。

    these beautiful pearls are already

    good enough.

    你看。

    Look.

    韩佳: 你选的珍珠啊还真挺好的。

    The pearls you chose are

    really very good.

    估计能卖个好价钱。

    I guess they’ll sell for

    a good price.

    王渊源:那是。

    Sure.

    我现在辨别珍珠的能力已经很厉害了。

Now I’ve become very good at

    distinguishing pearls.

    再练练,我估计我能开我自己的店。

I guess with a bit more training,

I can open a shop of my own.

    你说呢?

    What do you say?

    韩佳: 那你要是开了店啊,

You’re going to open a shop

    of your own?

    我可一定要去光顾一下哦。

I’ll certainly pay a visit to it.

    王渊源:欢迎光临!

    Welcome to my shop!

赏心悦目:

    珍珠 大自然赐予北海的礼物

Pearls are a nature-endowed gift for Beihai,

    北海盛产的”南珠”驰名全国

which is known as home to southern pearls.

    新颖别致的珍珠工艺品

The exquisite and unique pearl handicrafts

    晶莹夺目 精妙绝伦

are eye-catching and excellent in quality.

    无数游人慕名而来

    Countless visitors are attracted to

    the place by its reputation

    游览银滩之市 珍珠之都

as the city of silver beaches and

    capital of pearls.

    韩佳: 嗬,真开店了。

    Huh, you’ve really opened

    your own shop.

    动作够快的呀!

    You acted so quickly!

    王渊源:那是。

    Sure.

    韩佳: 哎,王老板,

    Eh, Boss Wang,

    你怎么还自己在穿珠子呀?

    why are you stringing the

    pearls yourself?

    王渊源:从创业开始嘛。

Because this is just the beginning

    of my business.

哎哟,你看,

    Oh, look,

    一打岔我就穿不上了。

due to your interruption, now I have

    difficulty threading the pearls.

    这样吧,

    Well, I suggest

    你先给大家出今天的有奖问答题吧。

    you set today’s award-winning question.

    别给我添乱了。

    Don’t disrupt me anymore.

    韩佳: 好吧,好吧。

    Okay, okay.

    那我来给大家出今天的有奖问答题。

Now I’m going to set today’s

    award-winning question.

    不要打扰王老板做生意了。

    I’d better not disrupt Mr.

    Wang’s business.

    您听好了。题目是这样的。

    Listen carefully. Here’s the question.

    节目的最后呢,

At the end of the program,

    还是要提醒您口号不能忘。

we’d still want to remind you

    not to forget our slogan.

    学说中国话,朋友遍天下!

Learn Chinese and make friends everywhere!

    王渊源:哎,再加一句,再加一句。

    Hey, one more sentence.

    上好珍珠哪里见,请来渊源南珠店!

    Come to Yuanyuan’s Southern Pearls

Shop to look for the best pearls!

    明天见。

    See you tomorrow.
